Rivian Releases Software Update to Fix Charging Bug on Gen-2 Vehicles

EV maker Rivian has released a software update to address a bug that limited some second-generation R1 vehicles to charging at just 8 amps on Level 2 home chargers — a fraction of their normal capability.

Several owners reported Thursday that their Gen 2 R1 vehicles began prompting them to install the new 2025.46.30 update, which weighs approximately 1GB and can be installed in about 20 minutes.

The update includes two fixes, according to the release notes first reported by Rivianroamer: a rare issue that limited the AC charging rate setting to a maximum of 8 amps, and a very rare issue causing system fault notifications after waking from sleep.

Bug Emerged Last Month

As reported by EV in late December, the charging limitation emerged after Rivian released its 2025.46 update — one of the company’s most significant software releases of 2025.

The bug drastically reduced power intake to approximately 1.9 kW on a 240V circuit.

Multiple owners reported that their vehicles automatically reverted to an 8-amp charging limit on Level 2 setups after installing the update, regardless of attempts to adjust settings.

The limitation represented a significant downgrade from typical rates of 32 amps or higher, extending charging times from hours to days for a full battery. DC fast charging was not affected.

The issue appeared isolated to certain Gen 2 models, with Gen 1 vehicles largely unaffected based on user feedback.

Prior Charging Issues

The 2025.46 update had been intended to address an earlier AC charging problem Rivian identified in December.

The company emailed customers warning that the issue “prevents certain R1 vehicles from AC charging at home or with Level 2 chargers when in colder weather.”

However, the update appears to have introduced a new problem while attempting to fix the cold-weather failures.

“My gen2 doesn’t have the current problem where L2 charge speed is limited,” a Rivian owner wrote in a brand-related forum on Thursday after installing the latest update. “I did get hit by the previous cold weather issue though.”

Owner Complaints

Discussions on Reddit’s r/Rivian community revealed a pattern of complaints starting within days of the December update’s installation.

One Gen 2 R1S owner reported their charging rate dropped from 48 amps to 24 amps on a Tesla home charger immediately after updating.

Another described the system persistently resetting to 8 amps, rendering overnight charges ineffective.

The glitch was particularly disruptive for owners relying on home Level 2 charging, forcing some to seek alternatives such as public DC fast chargers.

Consumer Reports Ranking

The charging issues come despite Rivian ranking first for the third consecutive year in Consumer Reports’ Owner Satisfaction ratings, which evaluates vehicles based on performance, comfort, and usability.

However, despite its high satisfaction score, consumers rated Rivian as the least reliable brand in 2025.
