Rivian introduced itself to the world with the R1S and R1T models, available from the start to configure in a wide range of colors.
In late 2020, the company opened the configurator for the two models — the R1T pick-up and the R1S SUV —, allowing users to pick the Launch Edition-exclusive green color or to opt for other colors.
The original palette included Rivian Blue, Glacier White, El Cap Granite, Red Canyon, Limestone, Midnight, Forest Green, and LA Silver (which later became the standard color).
The Irvine-based EV maker delivered its first R1T in late 2021, finished in the exclusive Launch Green.
Deliveries of non-Launch Edition trims began in January 2022.
Rivian‘s founder and CEO RJ Scaringe told Access earlier this year that the company chose a design language “that’s more calming or more approachable.”
“I think culturally and from a societal point of view, a lot of people are drawn to that. Something that feels timeless, it’s not too aggressive, it’s not trying too hard,” he stated.
Rivian Green
Rivian vehicles debuted with the Launch Green, a limited-edition color that has since been made available to Quad Motor variants of the R1 models.
Earlier this year, the company announced that the color has evolved to become ‘Rivian Green,’ in a partnership with Pantone.
The new green is “inspired by the green tones found in our manufacturing process” and “balances the tension between engineering and nature, evolving our original Launch Green into an enduring pillar of the brand.”
The color has been used as a starting point for how Rivian shows up in “spaces, events, partnerships, and everywhere else.”
Limited Editions
Throughout the years, Rivian has released limited editions of its R1 models that are centered around specific colors.
It started with the ‘California Dune Edition,’ a sand-painted edition of both its R1S and R1T Tri-motor vehicles.
The company didn’t reveal the production numbers for each model; however, the price remained the same as the standard colored Tri-Motor options.
Then, late last year, Rivian released a purple exterior color called ‘Borealis.’
The color was based on Alaska’s Northern Lights, also referred to as ‘Aurora Borealis,’ and is available for a limited time for both the R1S and R1T models.
Additionally, the company has introduced a limited 10-unit run of the ‘Miami Edition,’ its first location-based limited edition, featuring white paint with bluish accents.
Current Colors
Besides the recently launched Rivian Green and Borealis, the company currently offers LA Silver, Glacier White, Forest Green, El Cap Granite, Midnight, and Rivian Blue.
Compass Yellow, which Rivian‘s brand logo bears, used to be offered for configuration. It was permanently discontinued in 2023 amid low demand.
When the second-generation R1 models were launched in 2024, Storm Blue was added — although only available to Tri and Quad-motor trims.
Rivian reduced its color palette when introducing 2026 model year vehicles last year, discontinuing Limestone and Red Canyon.
However, internal sources told Riviantrackr that Red Canyon will be returning this year, without specifying whether it will be available to R1 models or in the new R2 — or to both models.
R2 Launch
Rivian will “share full details” on its upcoming R2 SUV — including trims, pricing, and the first available colors — on March 12.
Upon announcing that the first manufacturing validation builds of the R2 mid-size SUV had rolled off the production line, the company shared photos shot entirely in black and white.
Rivian has confirmed only one exterior color for the model so far — a white finish shown as the company announced that the Launch Edition R2 will be a dual-motor variant.
As the media embargo for R2 reviews was lifted earlier this month, several social media users have begun noticing the vehicle colors hidden below the protective wrap.
In addition to the white finish, a subtle blue tone can be seen under the covers in a video published by tech reviewer Marques Brownlee — who is also known as MKBHD.
Additionally, it remains unclear whether the new Rivian Green may be available for configuration with the R2.
Upon announcing the color, the EV maker only referred to the upcoming model once, stating that the color “marks a significant step as Rivian prepares to reach even more people with the addition of R2.”
The model will be introduced at the 2026 SXSW Music Festival & Conference, scheduled to take place between March 12 and 18.
Rivian announced on Wednesday that it has partnered with CrunchLabs, a STEM innovation company founded by engineer and YouTube creator Mark Rober.
The collaboration will “officially kick off on Friday, March 12 during SXSW at the Rivian Electric Roadhouse,” the company stated, adding that RJ Scaringe will join Rober there.
