Rivian Quietly Delays R2 Launch in Canada and Europe

Rivian has quietly delayed the launch of its R2 electric SUV in Europe and pushed back the Canadian debut by at least a year, according to updates made to its website Thursday.

The company removed its previously stated 2027 target for Europe, replacing it with the message “Rivian is coming to Europe — be one of the first to get the latest news and updates” without specifying a launch year.

For Canada, the website now shows “Coming 2027” instead of the original 2026 timeline.

The previously listed starting price of C$66,500 has also been removed entirely.

The US launch remains on track for spring 2026, with the company set to reveal full pricing, options, and specifications on March 12.

European Expansion Uncertain

Rivian had previously planned to enter its first European markets in 2027 alongside the R2’s international rollout.

The company’s website now lists dedicated pages for 18 countries including the UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Sweden, and Austria, though no launch dates are provided for any market.

Chief Executive Officer RJ Scaringe visited the IAA Auto Show in Munich last September but declined to provide a timeline for European deliveries when speaking with UK media outlet AutoCar.

He said the brand would be positioned in Europe as “highly aspirational but highly attainable.”

US Debut Approaches

The delays abroad come as Rivian prepares for the R2’s domestic launch.

Media reviews published earlier this week following the lifting of an embargo revealed the dual-motor prototype packs 656 horsepower, 609 lb-ft of torque, and accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds.

Rivian estimates range at more than 300 miles from an 87.4 kWh battery pack, with 10% to 80% charging in approximately 30 minutes.

The SUV measures 186 inches in length — about 15 inches shorter than Rivian‘s existing R1S and roughly 2,000 pounds lighter.

The company has said US deliveries will begin in the first half of 2026, with the base trim starting at $45,000.

A sales representative at Rivian‘s King of Prussia Mall showroom in Pennsylvania told a customer deliveries would start in mid-April, though the company has not confirmed that timeline.

The EV maker said on Thursday that deliveries will begin in the second quarter of the year.

Rivian shares jumped 14.6% to $16.05 in after-hours trading on Thursday after the company’s fourth-quarter financial results beat Wall Street expectations.
