Rivian has extended on Wednesday the free trial of its assisted driving software “until late 2025.”
Named ‘Autonomy Platform+,’ the software is exclusive to the second-generation R1T and R1S vehicles and an upgrade from the standard (free) Rivian Autonomy Platform.
Previously, Rivian’s app showed that the trial would end by “early 2025.”
The price of Rivian’s Autonomy Platform+ is not yet known. The EV maker has not disclosed whether the software will be available as a one-time payment or as a monthly subscription, such as Tesla’s (supervised) Full Self Driving.
However, drivers of first generation vehicles have access to the Driver+ suite of assisted driving and autonomy features.
The brand’s autonomy platform is equipped with 11 cameras and five radars and covers about 130,000 miles of highways in the United States and Canada, with Rivian planning to expand the coverage and to feature advanced “hands-off, eyes-off” capability.
Although Scaringe previously stated that the company’s autonomy would focus on highways, not disclosing whether it would later go beyond that, the chief executive said this week that the company plans for “select surface roads.”
“That’s going to expand from highways to being able to go point-to-point, so you get in your car in your driveway, put in an address, and it drives itself,” he stated.
The Autonomy Platform+ currently includes the Lane Change on Command feature — which lets the driver signal for the vehicle to find the right moment to change lanes — and the Enhanced Highway Assist (EHA) — which supports hands-free driving on major highways.
The EHA was rolled out in March via software update for second-generation R1T and R1S vehicles. Driving Comfort Assist is expected to launch later this year — it will let the vehicle speed based on surrounding traffic.
The standard free version offers highway assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane keeping, blind spot monitoring, forward collision warnings, and more.
Tesla currently offers a $99/month subscription of its advanced FSD system to American customers. Customers can also opt for a single payment of $8,000.
