Rivian has been awarded a contract with Sourcewell, a Minnesota-based public entity that provides cooperative purchasing contracts to government agencies and public organizations nationwide.
The EV maker’s vehicles are now available for purchase to over 50,000 participating entities, through its ‘Cooperative Purchasing Program.’
The multi-year contract runs until November 13, 2029, with the option to add up to three one-year extensions, potentially lengthening its total duration from four to seven years.
Rivian‘s Fleet Sales team member Steve Moretti revealed the information in a LinkedIn post on Wednesday.
According to his page in the social media platform, Moretti is responsible for “helping develop/execute the strategy, marketing, and sales of Rivian vehicles within the fleet industry and to strategic customers.”
Sourcewell
Sourcewell is a local unit of Minnesota’s state government. However, its services are available to entities across the whole country.
Through Sourcewell, public organizations can procure EV infrastructure, charging, services, and support without issuing their own requests for proposal (RFPs), reducing bureaucracy.
“If you are unfamiliar with Sourcewell, they streamline the procurement process with pre-negotiated, competitive contracts enabling government, educational, and nonprofit organizations to efficiently acquire cost-effective, high-quality products and service,” Moretti wrote.
These customers will be able to integrate Rivian‘s R1 models and the electric delivery van (EDV) on their fleets.
According to data provided by the EV manufacturer during the contract finalization process, public entities represented roughly 0.5% of all vehicle sales between August 2022 and August 2025.
Based on Cox Automotive’s Kelley Blue Book EV Report, covering July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2025, Rivian is estimated to have sold 140,767 EVs in the US — which indicates that approximately 700 of those went to government fleets.
Caltrans
Over the past year, several users on social media shared images of Rivian vehicles branded with a fluorescent orange stripe and the ‘Caltrans’ branding.
According to sources cited by Riviantrackr, “roughly 450 units” were first delivered to the California-based entity, with “additional deliveries planned to surpass 600.”
The vehicles are likely to be used for state operations and regional field work, as part of California’s Transportation Plan.
The Palo Alto Police Department also announced its partnership with Rivian in early 2025, receiving its first patrol-ready Rivian R1S for testing in September.
Last year, California Governor Gavin Newsom was spotted using a Rivian R1S SUV as his official state vehicle, replacing his Chevrolet Suburban.
