Rivian CEO Says R4 and R5 in Development, R6 Under Consideration

Although the Rivian R2 and R3 models are still to be launched, the electric vehicle maker is already working on the R4 and R5 models, the founder and CEO RJ Scaringe said in a new interview aired on Tuesday.

Speaking on The Tosh Show with US comedian Daniel Tosh, Scaringe said the electric vehicle maker’s product plan currently extends to “five or six different vehicles,” with the R4 and R5 following the forthcoming R2 and R3.

“That’s as far out as our product plan goes today… but there may be like an R6,” he said, adding that he could not reveal details publicly.

The comments come as Rivian prepares to launch its new midsize platform, unveiled in March 2024, which will underpin the R2 and R3.

Deliveries of the R2 SUV remain on track to begin in the first half of 2026, with pricing expected to start around $45,000.

The R3, a smaller crossover, will be priced below the R2 and will include a high-performance R3X variant.

Rivian began deliveries of its R1T pickup in 2021, the first all-electric pickup on the US market.

The company’s first project was an electric sports car. However, the plans were changed immediately after the prototype was done.

Asked about battery technology, Scaringe said ranges of 500 or 600 miles were unlikely in the near term, with 300 to 400 miles representing “the sweet spot.”

He described Rivian vehicles as “the safest car you can drive right now” but noted that crash outcomes depend on the other vehicle involved.

On market competition, he welcomed new entrants and confirmed he had previously owned two Teslas.
