Rivian CEO Says R2 Will Have a “Very High Level of Autonomy”

In an interview with “The InEVitable” podcast, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said the upcoming smaller, cheaper R2 model will “come out of the gate with a very high level of autonomy”.

The founder of the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer said that the model, which prices will start at $45,000, will be “worlds different” than the Tesla Model Y — the world’s best selling model.

“I think the most important thing is that recognizing the R2 is coming, R3 is coming. The Gen 2 architecture on R1 is also building our training models and really building our data set for the same set of cameras that go into the R2. So R2’s using identical cameras to what’s in Gen 2”, the chief executive explained.

During Rivian’s third annual Family and Friends Day, a company executive disclosed that the R2 model has already garnered “well over 100,000 pre-orders.”

“It’s using the same, it’s like the platform. But the beauty is it’s going to have the benefit of close to two years of learning and improvement. So when R2 launches, it’s going to come out of the gate with a very high level of autonomy,” RJ Scaringe added.

Earlier this week, Rivian has begun deploying its latest over-the-air (OTA) software update, version 2024.27, for the second-generation R1 models (R1S and R1T).
The update brings access to new apps such as Apple Music and Audible, a 60-Day Trial of Connect+ and several enhancements.

Last week,  Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe revealed that the company will no longer use Mobileye’s tech in the Gen-2 vehicles.

Rivian will report its second-quarter financial results late Tuesday, after the market closes.
