Rivian addressed on Monday the battery display issue that affected several vehicle owners over the weekend.
A major software bug, which affected an unknown number of Rivian vehicles, displayed incorrect battery charge levels, leaving drivers stranded when their cars ran out of power โ despite showing remaining range.
In a new e-mail sent to customers, first shared by X user ‘JSoLaNo82,’ the EV maker urged drivers to install the latest over-the-air update โ 2025.38.30 โ and reassured owners that the issue was purely software-related.
Over the weekend, X user โRivianTrackrโ had confirmed through owner reports that Rivian identified the problem as a software bug rather than a battery chemistry issue.
Software Update
Rivianโs latest software update, which began rolling out late last week, addressed several issues noticed by both owners and the team.
According to the release notes, it included rare issues such as the 12V battery draining when the vehicle woke from sleep and fast-charging failures.
The company also stated that it had fixed an issue that impacted the charge port indicator and the in-vehicle charge status display.
On Monday, Rivian said it is “reaching out to share a few steps to ensure your vehicle’s range is displaying accurately,” as owners update their vehicles.
The EV maker says that “once you’ve installed OTA [2025.38.30], your range estimator’s accuracy will improve incrementally every time you charge to 100% state of charge,” which the company recommends owners to do “over the next few weeks.” (full e-mail available below)
Battery Display Issue
The issue came to public attention after multiple users reported it on social media. Several owners found that, despite the system indicating a SoC of over 20%, their devices went out of charge.
The company has not issued a formal recall, safety notice, or public statement regarding the battery gauge malfunction.
However, multiple Rivian owners said the company has contacted them regarding the issue.
Others noted that while they experienced the bug before, it was fixed with the new update released on Friday.

“Hi Jose,
Over-the-air update [2025.38.30] is now available to install on your R1S and we’re reaching out to share a few steps to ensure your vehicle’s range is displaying accurately.
Due to a software calibration issue, your vehicle may experience range estimation that becomes progressively inaccurate as state of charge decreases.
You will notice the height of the inaccuracy once you’re below 20% state of charge and that the range estimation recalculates and reduces faster than anticipated.
Once you’ve installed OTA [2025.38.30], your range estimator’s accuracy will improve incrementally every time you charge to 100% state of charge.
Over the next few weeks, we recommend charging your battery to 100% as frequently as possible to allow your range estimator to recalibrate.
Please note that there’s nothing wrong with your vehicle’s battery – this is a software-related calibration issue and is addressed with the latest update and temporarily charging to 100% more frequently to recalibrate.
