Benchmark Calls Rivian R2 Event an ‘Important Demand Signal,’ Keeps Buy Rating

Benchmark said on Thursday in a new research note that Rivian‘s R2 pricing and configuration reveal scheduled for later on the day is a critical proof point for the company’s mass-market ambitions.

The EV maker is set to unveil full details at SXSW on Thursday afternoon, one day after a media outlet published and then removed a full review that disclosed three trim levels, specifications, and colours.

“We view the event as an important demand signal and proof point for manufacturing execution,” Legg wrote in a research note published ahead of the reveal.

The analyst expects the presentation to focus on pricing architecture, initial trims, and launch sequencing rather than new product announcements.

Benchmark’s analyst Mickey Legg reiterated a Buy rating and $25.00 price target on the stock.

Based on Wednesday’s closing price, the target implies an upside potential of nearly 53%.

Launch Price Expected Above $45,000

Legg’s note aligns with what the leak revealed on Tuesday.

The analyst wrote that initial R2 pricing is “likely to come in above the widely cited $45k target given a simplified launch configuration centred on dual-motor AWD, with a clearly articulated roadmap to a ~$45k single-motor entry over time.”

The leaked review placed the Performance variant at $57,990 and the Premium at $53,990, both with dual-motor all-wheel drive and an 87.9 kWh battery.

R2’s Premium trim is planned to include LiDAR sensors, supplied by one of the largest automotive and robotics LiDAR manufacturers, RoboSense.

The $45,000 Standard — with a smaller battery, single motor, and an estimated 265 miles of range — was listed for late 2027, roughly 18 months after the spring 2026 launch.

Controlled Complexity

Legg framed the above-$45,000 launch price as a deliberate strategy rather than a broken promise.

Rivian “has emphasised configuration simplicity and a controlled ramp to accelerate quality, reduce complexity, and build early momentum,” the analyst wrote.

Model Y in the Crosshairs

Legg positioned the R2 as a “direct competitor to the Tesla Model Y, targeting a segment with limited differentiated EV options that combine utility, performance, and brand appeal.”

The framing is notable given the pricing gap.

The R2 Performance at $57,990 sits almost exactly at the Tesla Model Y Performance’s $57,490 price point, but the base R2 at $45,000 — when it arrives — will still carry a $5,000 premium over the Model Y Standard.

R2 in China?

Michael Castiglione, Rivian‘s Director of Exterior Design, revealed the information in a Forbes interview aired earlier this week that the company is considering the Chinese market.

The SUV market in China is led by the Tesla Model Y and by the Xiaomi YU7 — the second model of the tech giant which entered the automotive industry only two years ago.

The company, co-founded and led by Lei Jun, is gearing up to launch additional SUVs over the next few months.

In late April, the Beijing Auto Show will take place in the same city as Xiaomi‘s headquarters.

Rivian shares closed at $16.67 on Wednesday as was trading 2% lower as of press time at $16.31.

The stock has declined roughly 26% from its December high of $22.69.
