Nissan Scraps Plans For Compact EV Production in U.S.

Nissan Motor Co. has dropped plans to produce a compact electric vehicle (EV) at its Mississippi plant.

Last May, the company had announced plans to manufacture five EV models at the Mississippi facility starting in 2026. However, the production of one compact model, codenamed PZ1L, will be relocated to Nissan’s plant in Sunderland, UK.

Nissan’s VP of communications for North America Brian Brockman confirmed to Automotive News that the crossover, designed to fit between the Leaf and Rogue in size, will not be built in the U.S. He added that the Canton facility will still play a central role in Nissan’s EV strategy, with plans to produce five new electric models over the next several years.

The PZ1L project is expected to proceed in Sunderland, but the vehicle will no longer be sold in the U.S. market.

This decision follows a series of delays and cancellations for Nissan’s EV projects. The automaker recently postponed plans to produce two electric sedans in Mississippi, citing ongoing adjustments to its global production and market strategy.

The Nissan LEAF, the automaker’s entry-level EV, is the most affordable electric vehicle in the U.S., with a starting price of $28,140. Between July and September, the Japanese brand sold about 4,500 units in the United States.
