SunCar Expands Insurance Tie-Up With Nio, Adds ES8 and L90 Models

China’s SunCar said on Wednesday it has expanded its partnership with Nio to include coverage for the electric carmaker’s two newest three-row SUVs — the third-generation ES8 and the L90 from its Onvo sub-brand.

Last month, XPeng said it extended its partnership with SunCar, which began in late 2022, following the launch of its new G7 SUV. Earlier in July, SunCar also expanded ties with Xiaomi after the smartphone maker rolled out its second EV, the YU7 SUV.

SunCar, a cloud-based auto insurance service provider, has worked with Nio since 2020.

The company said it will now enter “further and deeper cooperation” with the Shanghai-based EV maker.

The insurer upgraded its Anji Cloud Service Center at the end of 2023 to provide Nio owners with more tailored insurance offerings.

SunCar uses artificial intelligence and big data to design auto insurance solutions for Nio as well as Tesla, XPeng, Xiaomi, Leapmotor and other Chinese automakers.

“With the launch and strong sales of the ES8 and Onvo L90 models featuring advanced intelligent driving, ultra-fast charging, and luxury tech features, SunCar will continue to provide Nio car owners with the most innovative auto insurance solutions available in China,” the company said in a statement.

The Onvo L90 was pre-launched in early July, formally unveiled on July 31, and began deliveries on August 1.

The model is on track to exceed 10,000 units in its first month, according to industry data.

Nio’s third-generation ES8 was unveiled last week and will be officially launched at the company’s annual Nio Day in Hangzhou in the second half of September.

The update follows a string of similar moves by SunCar to broaden cooperation with Chinese EV makers.

SunCar has additionally built joint insurance platforms with Stellantis-backed Leapmotor and last year began offering e-insurance for Tesla in China.

The company said premium volume from its Tesla partnership grew from about $400,000 in January 2024 to $40 million by year-end across 48 Chinese cities.

By the end of 2024, the company had cooperated with several automakers, including premium brands Nio and Zeekr, family-oriented Li Auto, state-owned SAIC Motor, among others.
