Matt Galvin, former managing director for Nio in the UK, is set to lead Geely’s electric vehicle brand Polestar as Managing Director for the UK and Ireland. Galvin recently completed a transitional period and is now stepping into his new role.

Polestar faced a significant drop in sales in the United Kingdom last month, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The company’s sales plummeted from 1,034 units in May 2023 to just 314 vehicles in May this year, a year-on-year decline of 69.63 percent, representing a market share of 0.21 percent.

Galvin initially joined Nio in September 2022, where he was responsible in establishing and launching the brand’s UK operations, according to his LinkedIn.

By March 2023, Galvin had expanded his responsibilities to include Head of European Sales, overseeing business operations across Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Germany.

With over two decades of experience in the automotive industry, Galvin has held senior positions at prominent manufacturers, including BMW, Renault UK, and Mercedes-Benz UK.

In a LinkedIn post, Galvin expressed his enthusiasm for his new position: “I’m delighted to share that I’m starting a new role as Managing Director of Polestar UK & Ireland! Today marks the start of a brief handover period before taking the reins from Jonathan Goodman to lead this exciting and dynamic business,” he said.

“They say that timing is everything and as we move from a single car line-up to a three-car brand, I couldn’t have timed it better. The company is at a pivotal point in its development and with the introduction of two exciting new models, we will see the brand go from strength to strength! I can’t wait to integrate myself with the Polestar UK team and Polestar Retailer network as we embark on this next stage of Polestar’s journey together,” Galvin added.

Nio launched last week its flagship SUV EL8 in the five European countries opening pre-orders while deliveries are expected to start in September.

Initially launched in China in late 2022, the EL8 has been refreshed with the new Executive variant priced in Germany at €108,900 with battery included and at €87,900 with the Battery as a Service system.
