Onvo Rolls Out New Software Update, Skips ADAS-Focused ‘Major Iteration’

Nio‘s sub-brand Onvo announced on social media on Wednesday that it had begun rolling out a new software update for its ‘Coconut’ operating system.

The 2.1.5 update arrives nearly four months after version 2.1.0 was released.

“This year, Coconut will continue to iterate on intelligent cabin and intelligent assisted driving features,” Onvo stated in the release notes of the latest iteration.

The new update focuses on cabin improvements rather than driver assistance — despite brand chief Fei Shen’s January promise of a “major iteration” to the pure-vision assisted driving system following the Spring Festival holiday in mid-February.

“In 2026, I believe — and we definitely have plans — the version after Spring Festival will also have some major iterations. Everyone can rest assured,” Shen said at the time.

As of Wednesday, no driver assistance update has been announced.

Upcoming LiDAR Versions

Shen’s reassurance came as Onvo prepares to launch LiDAR-equipped versions of its vehicles — a departure from the pure-vision approach the sub-brand had promoted since its 2024 launch.

The brand chief confirmed in January that both the L90 and the upcoming L80 would offer LiDAR variants.

Initially, the company said its debut model, the L60, would remain pure-vision only.

However, a catalogue published earlier this month by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology revealed that the L60 may also receive a LiDAR-equipped version.

Coconut 2.1.5

While December’s 2.1.0 update brought meaningful driver assistance changes — integrating urban navigation and parking assistance into Nio‘s unified end-to-end City Pilot system — version 2.1.5 is focused on the cabin experience.

The update refines how the vehicle handles audio, addressing a common annoyance where navigation and media volume settings could conflict when adjusted from the steering wheel.

The rear control screen now mutes button sounds when locked, and first-time users will receive a prompt to activate the dashcam.

Onvo is also pushing into premium audio, with QQ Music’s high-quality zone now offering Dolby Atmos, panoramic sound, and Hi-Res content.

NetEase Cloud Music also gains full-screen support on the ceiling entertainment screen, giving rear passengers direct control over song requests, playback, and lyrics.

The brand’s in-car AI voice assistant ‘Xiao Le’ picks up new commands — including the ability to mute or unmute the front row, switch sound field modes, and dismiss the rear child monitoring camera by voice.

A small but practical fix also lets users open the glove box via voice while in the 360-degree parking camera view.

On connectivity, Nio Link apps can now be cast to the ceiling entertainment screen when paired with a Nio Phone.

The update also introduces real-time battery swap pricing in the map navigation — a sign of deeper integration with parent company Nio‘s swap network.

Battery Swap

In the swap station selection and ordering page, users can now view real-time swap pricing to know costs in advance.

As of press time, Nio operated 3,766 stations across China, with over 105.6 million battery swaps provided since the first station opened in 2018.

The availability of Onvo-compatible batteries at Nio‘s swap stations has been a persistent problem for customers who opted for purchase their vehicle’s through the Battery as a Service (BaaS) program.

Under BaaS, customers pay a monthly subscription fee for the battery instead of buying it outright with the car.

The program allows them to use battery swap stations across the country on top of the traditional charging option.

The swap network allows them to replace their depleted battery with a nearly fully charged one (about 95%) in approximately three minutes.

Last month, the brand completed the deployment of 8,000 additional battery packs across the network’s stations.

Onvo Sales Plunge

Nio‘s sub-brand Onvo delivered just 2,981 vehicles in February 2026, marking a new record low since the brand launched in September 2024 and a 26.4% drop from February 2025.

The decline extends a downward trend that began earlier this year, with the elimination of tax incentives in China followed by the Lunar New Year holiday — which typically makes February one of the weakest months for auto sales.

The Nio Group is expecting sales of the three brands to account for 32,021 and 35,021 vehicles in March, recovering from nearly 27,200 vehicle deliveries in January and around 20,800 in February.

Onvo‘s retail expansion has also lagged behind targets.

The brand currently operates 420 stores, well short of its goal of 1,000 by the end of 2025.

During Nio‘s fourth-quarter earnings call, CEO William Li reaffirmed the company’s plans to expand into lower-tier markets in 2026 through shared multi-brand stores serving all three Nio group brands.

The first store combining the Nio, Onvo, and Firefly brands opened last month in China, as the company aims to increase demand for its sub-brands.
