L60, the debut model of Nio’s sub-brand Onvo, became on Friday the first battery electric vehicle (BEV) to achieve a 5-star safety rating under the new 2024 China New Car Assessment Program (C-NCAP) standards.

The family-oriented SUV, which started being delivered in late September in China, is equipped with seven airbags, including a 43-liter ultra-large dual-stage airbag and a 2,072mm extended side air curtain. Additionally, Onvo‘s SUV features pre-tensioned dual-stage force-limiting seat belts.

The L60 received an overall score of 89.2%, setting a new benchmark for safety performance in its category. In occupant protection, the model scored 94.03% while 77.89% on vulnerable road user protection. For active safety, it scored 90.29%. Here’s the video of the crash test shared by China’s NCAP.

According to the EV maker, the battery system of the L60 is designed with a ten-frame aluminum compression structure capable of withstanding 20 tons of load. A composite material-based battery pack structure ensures additional safety and has successfully passed crash tests.

The vehicle’s body is constructed using 86% high-strength steel and aluminum composites, with submarine-grade steel (rated up to 2,000 MPa) used in critical areas and a 1,500 MPa ultra-high-strength front collision beam for added protection.

Onvo is preparing to launch another two family-oriented SUVs in 2025. In a media briefing held in Shanghai on Thursday, Nio’s founder and CEO William Li revealed that deliveries will start in the third and the fourth quarter of the year.

The management reiterated on Thursday that it aims to deliver over 10,000 vehicles this month and continue ramping up production next year to reach 20,000 units by March. In November, Onvo delivered 5,082 vehicles, up 17.6% from the 4,319 units recorded in October.

At the media briefing, William Li said that Onvo customers will be able to use 2,000 battery swap stations across China starting in April next year.
