Tesla’s Model Y, the world’s best-selling vehicle, was put to the test in China’s winter conditions alongside five newly launched electric SUVs from domestic automakers, as part of a comparative study by Chinese automotive platform AutoHome.

The test, conducted by the Chinese automotive platform AutoHome, evaluated the six vehicles on four key performance metrics at a temperature of -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit). These included energy consumption per 100 kilometers, actual driving range, range achievement rate—measuring the percentage of the rated range achieved—and the time required to charge the battery from 30% to 80%.

A total of six EV models, including the Tesla Model Y, Zeekr 7X, Onvo’s debut model L60, Voyah Zhiyin, BYD’s SeaLion 07, and the Luxeed R7, participated in a range and efficiency test.

AutoHome’s results showed Tesla’s Model Y achieved a driving range of 585 kilometers, or 85% of its advertised range, with an energy consumption of 13.78 kWh per 100 kilometers. The SUV required 31 minutes to charge from 30% to 80% capacity.

The Luxeed R7, a model from Huawei and Chinese automaker Chery, led the range test with 681.2 kilometers, narrowly higher than Onvo’s L60, which recorded 681 kilometers. Onvo, however, topped the achievement rate category, reaching 93.3% of its claimed range, versus 84.9% for the R7 SUV.

In terms of energy efficiency, Onvo’s L60 again emerged as the leader, consuming just under 12 kWh per 100 kilometers. BYD’s SeaLion 07 reported the highest consumption among the group, at 16.37 kWh per 100 kilometers.

On the winter charging test, the Model Y ranked after needing 31 minutes to go from 30% to 80% while the new models from Chinese EV makers stood all below half an hour. The Onvo L60, which was equipped with the 85kWh battery, led the ranking,

On Weibo, Onvo’s president wrote, “Another exciting achievement! The Onvo L60 has claimed three first-place results in winter testing at -10°C: an impressive 93.3% achievement rate for pure electric range, energy consumption of just 11.97 kWh per 100 km, and a 30%-80% charging time of only 21 minutes.”

“We invite the “one-ton crew” to bring on the challenges for the Onvo L60’s winter tests (it’s not easy for the L60). We’re not afraid of tests and welcome everyone to put us to the test!” the executive added.
