Nio to Add LiDAR to Onvo Vehicles for First Time Starting in Q2

A new catalogue released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has revealed several models from the Nio Group coming this year.

The filing provides the first official look at Nio‘s largest SUV, the ES9, and also confirms a new version of its sub-brand Onvo‘s L90.

It will be the first model from the sub-brand to feature LiDAR sensors.

Previously, Nio had included the suite of sensors only in its premium models, excluding vehicles from its family-oriented Onvo and budget-focused Firefly sub-brands.

The catalogue shows that the model will incorporate a LiDAR unit at the front center of the roof, similar to Nio vehicles.

With LiDAR costs falling sharply, the system is now being integrated into several models in lower-priced segments across the market.

According to a post made by Onvo‘s chief Shen Fei, first reported by CnEVPost, the new LiDAR-equipped L90 is scheduled to launch in the second quarter.

The Onvo L90 is priced at 299,800 yuan and available in both six-seat and seven-seat versions.

The price includes the battery; it lowers to 213,800 yuan if the customer opts for Nio‘s Battery as a Service (BaaS) system.

Shen said that the current L90, which utilizes pure-vision smart driving technology, will remain available for purchase and current owners will keep receiving software updates for the model.

While Nio has not made any official announcement regarding its inclusion in Onvo vehicles, the integration of advanced sensors is expected to enhance their assisted driving capabilities.

This improvement comes as Nio releases the second-generation Nio World Model (NWM 2.0), its AI driving system combining high-resolution cameras, LiDAR, radar, and ultrasonic sensors.

The software began its phased rollout via over-the-air (OTA) updates to vehicles equipped with Banyan OS, while models with Cedar and Cedar S platforms are scheduled to receive it throughout the first quarter of 2026.

Upcoming L80 Launch

Additionally, the new L90 will feature dual-tone exterior body colors — similar to what Nio has done with its flagship executive sedan ET9.

Considering the inclusion of the L80 rear badge in the images shared by the authority, it is likely that the five-seat version of the SUV will also feature these color options and the LiDAR unit.

A regulatory filing of the L80 last year showed that only the seating layout would vary from the three-row L90, which indicated that the model will be able to share most components with the six-(or seven-)seat SUV.

The model’s launch was postponed late last year as the company focused on ramping up production of the L90.

L90 Deliveries

The Onvo L90 debuted in July and sold over 10,000 units in its first three full months.

It lost its dominant share of Nio Group’s sales after the company launched the new ES8 SUV in mid-September.

However, Onvo’s three row SUV L90 was the company’s best-selling model in 2025, with 43,439 vehicles delivered — according to Nio‘s founder and CEO William Li.

Speaking at a ceremony earlier this week, Nio Group‘s founder and CEO William Li said that new orders for the Onvo brand are “steadily increasing,” despite the lower delivery results seen in the final months of 2025.

The chief executive noted that the new L80 will not compete with the other models of the group for orders, but rather contribute to the brand’s growth.
