Nio’s family-oriented sub-brand Onvo has delivered “more than 7,000 units” of its new L90 SUV between August 1 and August 21, the management said on Friday.
The figure was disclosed in a media Q&A session held in the early hours of Friday, about 12 hours after Nio unveiled a revamped version of its flagship ES8.
The L90, a six- and seven-seat SUV positioned in the large family segment, began deliveries on August 1 across 44 cities in China, one day after its official launch.
Insurance registration data shows Onvo recorded 3,790 registrations last week, its second-highest weekly tally since the brand began deliveries nearly a year ago.
Of these, 2,330 were L90s, up from 2,090 a week earlier.
Wait times for the L90 have lengthened earlier this month to “eight to ten weeks,” up from four to five weeks at launch.
Onvo said the delays reflect a “rapid surge in order volume” despite what it described as “relatively sufficient production preparations in advance.”
Shen Fei, Onvo’s chief and long-time Nio vice-president, said earlier this week that production lines for both the L90 and L60 are running at full capacity.
He added that the recent arrival of two new six-seat rivals — Tesla’s Model Y L and Li Auto’s i8 — represents “both a pressure point and an opportunity point” for the brand.
Tesla began accepting orders in China on Tuesday for the six-seat Model Y L, priced from 339,000 yuan ($47,180), with first deliveries expected in September.
Li Auto started nationwide deliveries of the i8 on Wednesday, following its late July launch.
Onvo plans to broaden its line-up later this year with the L80, a five-seat derivative of the L90.
The brand is targeting about 25,000 deliveries a month in the fourth quarter, or around 75,000 vehicles for the period.
In the same media session, Lihong said pre-orders for Nio’s all-new ES8, unveiled at a pre-launch event on Thursday evening, have already exceeded those for the Onvo L90 over the equivalent period following their respective debuts.
As of press time, Nio shares are surging for the second consecutive day. The stock is trading 10% higher at $6.10.
