The first batch of Onvo‘s new three-row electric SUV sold out in less than three hours after its official launch, according to a message sent by the ‘Nio Beijing Club’, a user community of the electric vehicle maker.
“New update: As of now, all available L90 showroom vehicles have been fully locked,” the club wrote, referring to the inventory made available for immediate order following the launch.
The L90 is priced from 265,800 yuan ($36,940) with an 85-kWh battery included. If purchased through the battery as a service (BaaS) program, the price drops to 179,800 yuan, with a monthly battery subscription fee of 899 yuan — equivalent to $125.
The company only disclosed it had nearly 600 vehicles prepared for test drives when those began last week, but did not specify how many units were included in the initial batch of the L90.
However, Onvo said on its app that it is adding 400 more vehicles to its test drive fleet across China.
“Starting today, we are adding 400 more Onvo L90 test drive vehicles,” the brand wrote.
“Together with the original fleet, there are now a total of 1,000 test drive vehicles available, helping to ease the wait times for users. We welcome everyone to book a test drive at our stores,” the brand added.
The unveiling event in Hangzhou concluded at around 9:00 p.m. local time on Thursday, with the online configurator opening immediately afterward on the Onvo app and website.
According to the X user Cnevhome, who attended the event, wrote on the social media platform that Onvo had in stock “around 10,000 units.”
Based on the timestamp of the message, it took less than three hours for Nio to reach the milestone of locking 10,000 units.
The founder and CEO William Li said earlier this week that delivering over 7,000 units in the first month was a target that “seems achievable.”
Li’s comments came amid a question in a WeChat group on whether the brand would be able to surpass Xiaomi SU7’s record reached early last year.
The L90 is the second model under Nio’s sub-brand Onvo, aimed at family buyers.
It is priced from 265,800 yuan ($36,940), or 179,800 yuan under Nio’s battery-as-a-service rental program.
Onvo began deliveries of its debut model, the L60 SUV, last September. Deliveries of the second one will start on Friday, August 1, while the 7-seat configuration will follow in late September.
The same message from the ‘Nio Beijing Club’ also revealed the timeline for the revamped ES8 SUV, which will be presented at Nio’s annual event.
“The all-new second-generation ES8 will arrive in stores on August 21, nationwide test drives will begin on September 12, and the model will officially launch on September 20.”
According to the timeline, the company’s ‘Nio Day’ event will take place on September 30. Nio’s co-founder and CEO Lihong Qin had previously stated that the event was being “tentatively planned” for late September.
As of the time of writing, US-listed shares of Nio were up 9.31% to $4.93, reflecting investor optimism surrounding the L90 launch.
Nio, Onvo and Firefly will report their July delivery figures on early Friday, August 1.
