Nio has filed new details of the upcoming ES9 with China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), a new catalogue released on Monday showed.
The Shanghai-based automaker is preparing to debut the model in the second quarter, with the launch “tentatively scheduled” for April 10, the company’s co-founder and President Lihong Qin said last month.
The first official images of the ES9 were revealed in an MIIT regulatory filing last month, along with the vehicle’s dimensions, showing that it will become China’s largest SUV.
New Revealed Specs
The latest catalogue revealed new specifications about the battery weight and range.
Nio ES9’s 102kWh battery pack will weigh 545 kg, representing an energy density of 187 Wh/kg.
The model will offer CLTC fully electric range options of 580, 600, and 620 km, depending on the configuration — equivalent to 360, 373, and 385 miles.
The smaller SUV — Gen-3 ES8 — has a CLTC range of 635 km (395 miles).
The ES9 will feature three LiDAR sensors, Nio‘s AQUILA sensing system, and an adaptive SkyRide chassis system, which enables automatic height adjustment — first applied to Nio’s executive flagship ET9 sedan launched last year.
It is also expected to implement two Shenji NX9031 intelligent driving chips, developed in-house.
Its 900V electrical architecture enables ultra-fast charging, which will allow the model to charge up to 200 km (124 miles) of range in just five minutes.
Last month, Nio‘s founder and CEO William confirmed to local media outlets that the ES9 had completed the tooling trial manufacturing phase and began pre-production.
Latest Filing
The model will measure 5,365 mm in length — making it 85 mm longer than the Nio ES8, launched last September and becoming China’s largest SUV, after the ultra-luxury Rolls-Royce Cullinan SUV.
The vehicle will be 2,029 mm wide and 1,870 mm tall, with a 3,250-mm wheelbase.
Last month’s regulatory catalogue also showed that the new model will feature a dual-motor all-wheel drive (AWD) system, producing a combined 520 kW (697 horsepower), with 180 kW (241hp) at the front motor and 340 kW (456hp) at the rear.
The vehicle’s maximum speed will be set at 220km/h.
The SUV will be equipped with CATL-supplied nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) ternary lithium-ion batteries with a capacity of 102 kWh.
It will be offered both with the battery included or through Nio‘s Battery as a Service (BaaS).
Management told Morgan Stanley last month the model would have an average selling price exceeding 500,000 yuan ($72,200).
Main Competitors
With the ES9, Nio aims to strengthen its position in China’s large premium SUV segment, competing against the Zeekr 9X and upcoming XPeng GX.
Launched last September, Zeekr‘s three-row plug-in hybrid (PHEV) SUV is built on a 900V high-voltage architecture — named ‘SEA Super Hybrid system’ — with a maximum power of 1,000 kW.
It delivers a CLTC pure electric range of up to 380 km (236 miles), and is priced from 465,900 yuan ($67,300) in China.
It achieved 30,000 cumulative deliveries last week.
Nio‘s rival XPeng, which has a lower average selling price in China, is set to launch its first flagship three-row SUV “in the months ahead”.
The Guangzhou-based company first unveiled the model last Thursday, with additional specifications revealed in last Friday’s MIIT catalogue and across the brand’s social media accounts.
At 5,265 mm long, the GX will be available in both BEV and extended-range electric (EREV) options.
Although XPeng hasn’t announced exact pricing yet, industry observers expect the GX to cost between 400,000 and 500,000 yuan — $57,800-$72,200.
Nio Sales
Last month, the Nio Group delivered 27,182 vehicles, nearly doubling from January 2025’s figures.
These numbers were mostly driven by its main premium brand, which accounted for over 20,000 units, with the ES8 SUV representing the majority of sales in the past few months.
This year, Nio aims to deliver between 456,000 and 489,000 vehicles, a 40–50% growth from 2025.
Its product lineup for 2026 hinges on several large SUVs, including not only the ES8 and ES9 SUVs, but also the new iteration of the five-seat ES7 — scheduled to launch in the third quarter.
Additionally, the company will launch the five-seat version of the Onvo L90 — the L80 — after it was initially delayed due to its focus on ES8 and L90 production in the final months of 2025.
