Since Nio‘s arrival in Europe in late 2021, all its models attained the prestigious 5-star rating from Euro NCAP. The 2023 Nio EL6, unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show in the same year, mirrors its predecessors’ success, securing an overall 5-star rating, the latest published this Wednesday.

The EL6, akin to other Nio models, integrates advanced sensor technologies including cameras, radar, and LiDAR technology to detect its surroundings, aiming to prevent or minimize accidents.

The EL6’s automated emergency braking (AEB) system demonstrates effectiveness in mitigating collisions with passenger vehicles and provides robust protection for vulnerable road users. However, it exhibits limitations in scenarios involving oncoming and overtaking motorcyclists, according to EuroNCAP’s comments.

The EL6 impressed with its superior performance in the Adult Occupant category, surpassing the Mercedes EQE with a score of 93% compared to 87%. However, it fell slightly behind in other categories such as Child Occupant (85% vs. 90%), Vulnerable Road Users (78% vs. 80%), and Safety Assist (76% vs. 85%).

Among the large SUVs tested by EuroNCAP, including Nio EL6 and EL7, BYD Tang, Xpeng G9, Lexus RZ, and VinFast VF8, the EL6 was the only one to fall short of a 5-star rating.

Compared to its larger sibling, the EL7, the EL6 ranked slightly lower. Nonetheless, both Nio EL6 and EL7 were the only large SUVs to score 90% or higher for adult occupant safety.

The 2024 EuroNCAP rating, consistent with 2023’s, introduces stricter criteria for Adult Occupant Protection, particularly emphasizing the impact partner compatibility. Additionally, new brain injury criteria have been integrated into frontal offset tests.

Further requirements include providing rescue sheets in all European languages and evaluating post-crash technologies. Notably, vehicles now undergo assessment for resistance to submergence, ensuring critical functions remain operational post-accident, such as electric window opening.

Nio is preparing to launch the 2024 facelift of its flagship sedan ET7 at the upcoming Beijing Auto Show, internal messages revealed. The upcoming facelift marks Nio‘s third version of the sedan unveiled in January 2021 at its annual event Nio Day.

In March, Nio delivered 11,866 vehicles, an increase of 14.3 per cent compared to the previous year. Of the deliveries, 6,737 were SUVs and 5,129 were sedans.

March saw a notable rebound in SUV sales for Nio, following a consecutive decline since July 2023 when SUV deliveries peaked at 14,066 units. As the company initiated deliveries of the upgraded 2024 versions of SUVs ES8, ES6, EC7, and EC6 in March, customer demand naturally surged.
