China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) published Tuesday a new batch of vehicles which will soon become available in the country including Nio’s new flagship sedan ET9 and the N9, the SUV of BYD’s brand Denza.

The ET9 was unveiled at Nio’s annual event in December 2023. Pre-orders opened immediately after the event with the company saying that deliveries were planned to begin in the first quarter of 2025.

The local media outlet AutoHome reported on Tuesday that the model will feature a 120kWh battery, though it did not specify whether, as with other Nio models, the ET9 will offer the option to buy or rent a smaller battery to lower the purchase price.

The 120 kWh battery will be supplied by China’s battery giant CATL.

“The ET9 is equipped with a self-developed 46105 cylindrical battery, offering a peak charging power of 600kW and a peak current of 772A, with an energy density of 292Wh/kg and a capacity of 120kWh,” AutoHome reported.

The model will also have access to the company’s battery swap stations where customers can swap the car’s battery for a (nearly) fully charged one in a few minutes.

The first model under Nio’s sub-brand Onvo started customer deliveries in late September and is available with a 60.6kWh battery which provides a CLTC range between 501 and 555 kilometers or with a larger one with 85 kWh.

When unveiling it, the company said the ET9 is designed “specifically for the new generation of high-end business users”.

In a recent note sent to clients last week, Deutsche Bank analyst Wang Bin said Nio will launch the ET9 sedan, the third generation of the SUVs ES8 and ES7, and a brand new sedan named ET6 in 2025.

Based on the statements, both the Nio ET5 sedan and its touring version (ET5T) will not be upgraded next year. When contacted by EV, a Nio spokesperson declined to comment on the rumours that have been circulating on Weibo.

Last month, Nio’s chief executive CEO pointed out the need for electric vehicle manufacturers to put the consumer’s interest first as the lack of “systematic thinking” can harm users’ trust in the brand.

In June, Nio launched in Europe the second generation of its flagship SUV ES8 (EL8). Deliveries are planned to start over the next few days across Germany, Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden.

After being the first-ever production model from the Shanghai-based brand, Nio first unveiled the second generation of the SUV at the Shanghai Auto Show in April 2023.
