Nio‘s sub-brand Firefly registered only three vehicles in Norway in September, data from the Norwegian Road Traffic Information Council (OFV) showed on Wednesday.
Norway, Nio’s first market outside China in 2021, is — along with the Netherlands — the launch market for its Europe-focused Firefly brand.
The premium Nio brand sold nearly 900 vehicles in the country in 2024 and targeted 1,500 units for this year as it adds Firefly to its lineup.
However, and despite Nio‘s core brand scoring its strongest month of the year in September, the Group’s sales stood at 308 units as of September 30.
Deliveries of Firefly‘s debut model began on August 14 in both Norway and the Netherlands.
According to the tracker platform Elbilstatistikk, Firefly registrations between September 1 and 30 brought the year-to-date total to 11 units.
In the second half of August, the brand registered two vehicles in the Nordic country.
As Norway is not part of the European Union, Nio was able to price the Firefly model lower than in other European markets.
The model isn’t subject to the additional tariffs the European Commission imposed a year ago on fully electric models imported from China.
Firefly’s debut model starts at 279,900 kroner ($28,180) with the battery included, since customers in Europe cannot use Nio’s battery-swap stations with Firefly cars.
The model is equipped with a 41.2 kWh LFP battery, offering 330 kilometers of WLTP range and up to 470 km in city driving.
Charging is possible via 100 kW DC — 10% to 80% in 29 minutes — or AC at 7 or 11 kW.
The model is available in rear-wheel drive, has 143 horsepower and 200 Nm of torque, accelerating from 0–100 km/h in 8.1 seconds with a top speed limited to 150 km/h.
It also includes a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function to provide external power without a bidirectional charger.
Nio management said in early September that Firefly’s production capacity is expected to peak at 6,000 units a month in the final quarter of the year as supply stabilizes.
“Firefly‘s production capacity is expected to ramp up to 6,000 units a month at its peak,” founder and Chief Executive William Li said on the company’s second-quarter earnings call.
Asked about a possible second Firefly model in 2026, Li said it was not planned.
Globally, Nio Group delivered 34,749 vehicles in September, a new monthly record for the second straight month.
The company plans to enter more than a dozen new European markets over the next 18 months, including Austria, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, Czech Republic, Greece, Bulgaria and Cyprus.
Norway’s overall EV penetration reached 98.3% of new car sales in September, up from 96.4% a year earlier.
