Nio to Open First Dealership in Denmark in ‘Early 2026’

Chinese EV maker Nio is planning to open its first dealership in Denmark early next year, the country manager Casper Mysling revealed on Thursday.

“In 2 business days we will move in here,” Mysling wrote on LinkedIn, adding that the official opening event of the ‘Nio Space Copenhagen’ will take place in “early 2026.”

The company is currently preparing its relaunch in the Scandinavian market after its late 2022 expansion failed to convince customers.

In 2024, only five units were sold, down from the 41 vehicles registered in 2023.

Local Distributor

Nio has signed a partnership agreement with a local distributor, which will be responsible for sales and after-sales services of both its Nio and Firefly brands.

Denmark was the first country where the company switched its business model, adopting the same dealership approach it is entering new countries with.

In its four major markets in Europe — Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands and Norway — the EV maker has so far maintained its direct-to-customer approach.

Nio will be represented by Nic. Christiansen Group, which also oversees sales of China’s giant BYD in the country.

Additionally, the distributor is responsible for Japanese brands Suzuki, Mazda and Toyota in Denmark, through its NCG Retail division.

Earlier this year, Nic. Christiansen Group said Nio vehicles would initially be showcased in Copenhagen, signaling the opening of the first dealership.

At that time, they announced plans to open additional showrooms in Aarhus and possibly Odense in 2026.

Local media also reported in June that the company would introduce its Onvo sub-brand in Denmark next year.

Since then, Nio has confirmed that the brand will launch in European markets in 2027, though the specific countries have not yet been revealed.

First Deliveries

Nio initially entered the Danish market in late 2022, with an approach centered around online sales, battery-as-a-service program, and its proprietary battery swap technology.

However, the model failed to gain traction in the country.

Since the beginning of 2025, the EV maker registered nine vehicles in Denmark. In 2024, only five units were sold, following 41 vehicles delivered in 2023.

In November, the company registered its first two vehicles in the Nordic market since its rentrée, one of each brand.

According to Nic Christiansen Group, the first vehicle from the Shanghai-based company was delivered to a customer late last month.

Battery Swap

As it relaunches in the market, Nio is only offering vehicles with the battery included, ditching the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) system it currently offers in other major European markets.

As exclusively reported by EV, the company recently closed its only battery swap station in Denmark, marking the first time the Shanghai-based company has shuttered such a facility anywhere in Europe since its 2021 continental debut.

Nio currently operates 60 battery swap stations across Europe, most of them located in Germany and Norway.
