Electric vehicle maker Nio, known for its battery swap technology, will build a new factory in Wuhan, China, to support the rollout of battery swap stations.
The 20,000-square-meter facility will have the capacity to produce over 1,000 stations annually, according to CEO William Li, who unveiled the plans at the company’s annual “Power Up” event on Tuesday.
In addition to the new factory, Nio will establish a new headquarters in Wuhan for Nio Power, its division focused on charging and battery swapping services.

As of today, the company has 2,580 battery swap stations in China and over 51.1 million battery swaps provided. Nio also has 2,322 charging stations across the country equipped with 10,577 chargers.

The EV maker has established a charging partnership with 20 brands in China opening its charging network to other new energy vehicle manufacturers. Brands include Polestar, Smart, Lotus, XPeng, Zeekr, Geely Auto, IM Motors, Buick, and others.
Last month, the CEO recognized that the company might fall short of this year’s target, anticipating a delay of one to two months. This would push the goal of installing 1,000 stations in China to be achieved between January 2024 and the end of February 2025.
In mid June, the company opened the first batch of fourth generation Battery Swap Station, which allows a faster battery replacement.
Over the last months, the company has been forming battery swap partnerships with several key automotive and energy companies including Changan Automobile, Geely Holding Group, Chery, and Jianghuai Automobile Group (JAC), and others.
