Nio Sues Five More Social Media Accounts Over Brand Defamation

Electric vehicle maker Nio said on Wednesday it is suing another five social media accounts for “maliciously defaming the brand” and “spreading false information,” stepping up its efforts to counter online criticism.

The new legal action comes less than a month after the company sued seven bloggers in China after noticing “a large number of online accounts fabricating information out of thin air to attack” both its core and Onvo brands.

In a statement posted on its Weibo Legal account on Wednesday, the Shanghai-headquartered group said it had secured evidence and would pursue legal measures against the account holders, including lawsuits.

The EV maker opened the Nio Legal Department account on the social media platform Weibo in May 2023, aiming to fight false information on social media and protect the company’s image.

As an update to the previous lawsuits it filed, Nio said they are “proceeding in an orderly manner” adding that the company will share updates on them “at an appropriate time.”

Earlier in July, the company had already denied allegations that its mass-market sub-brand Onvo engaged in orchestrated online attacks against rival carmakers.

On Monday morning, the automotive blogger Arthur Shen and the real estate-focused Weibo account ‘合肥川哥’ reported that Nio was preparing to start construction of a new headquarters tower in Hefei.

A few hours later, the company denied the reports saying it is “focused on making and selling cars, there’s no such thing.”

Below is the full statement from the Nio Legal Department:

“We would like to share with everyone the recent progress of the company’s actions to lawfully safeguard its rights:

The online accounts “繆斯高,” “陈硕科技,” “狗哥测评,” “大彬同学,” and “我是大彬同志” have maliciously defamed the brand and spread false information.

NIO has secured evidence and will take legal measures against the holders of these accounts, including filing lawsuits.

At the same time, the previously announced cases are proceeding in an orderly manner, and we will disclose case progress at an appropriate time.

On August 21, 2025, NIO will hold a product technology launch event for the new ES8, its all-scenario flagship SUV. Please stay tuned.
