Nio Showcases ‘TRON: Ares’-Themed ET5 Touring Wagons Ahead of Premiere

Nio said on Thursday it will display four special-edition ET5 Touring wagons themed after Disney’s upcoming movie TRON: Ares at its showrooms in Chengdu, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Shenzhen during China’s National Day holiday.

The collaboration with Disney marks a promotional campaign ahead of the film’s October 17 release in mainland China.

Nio is an official promotional partner for the movie.

Visitors who test drive vehicles of the Chinese EV maker between October 1 and 8 will have a chance to receive a TRON: Ares LED desk mat, the company said.

The move comes just days after Nio co-founder and president Qin Lihong said the ET5 Touring had unexpectedly become the brand’s monthly sales leader.

“Before the new ES8 launched yesterday, our recent monthly sales champion was the ET5 Touring. This was somewhat unexpected, because most thought wagons are a niche in China, but ours performed quite well,” Qin said over the weekend.

“This makes us reflect on understanding users more deeply and stripping away some trend-driven ideas,” he added.

On August 29, Nio announced it would equip all of its models with a 100 kilowatt-hour long-range battery pack as standard while keeping starting prices unchanged, effectively cutting costs for buyers.

In August, Nio brand delivered 10,525 vehicles in August, down 47.8% from 20,176 a year earlier.

Nio reported earlier this month a new record for global monthly deliveries in August, with the sub-brands Onvo and Firefly playing a major role.
