Nio Sells One Car in Sweden in June, Lowest Since January 2023

EV maker Nio recorded just one vehicle registration in Sweden in June, marking its weakest monthly result in the country in two and a half years, according to official national data.

The only unit registered last month was an EL7, the brand’s flagship five-seat SUV.

The model is priced from 839,000 SEK ($88,900), including VAT, when acquired via Nio’s Battery-as-a-Service program, where drivers gain access to the 60 battery swap stations installed across Europe.

This matches the company’s debut month in Sweden in January 2023, when it also registered just one vehicle.

In the second quarter of the year, the Shanghai-headquartered brand sold five vehicles.

Nio officially entered the Swedish market in October 2022 as part of a broader European expansion that included Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands. Its first European market was Norway, launched in September 2021.

In the first half of 2025, Nio registered 17 vehicles in Sweden, down 75% from 68 units during the same period last year.

Nio currently offers business lease deals in Sweden for three of its models.

The entry-level ET5 sedan starts at 6,724 SEK per month (benefit value: 2,541 SEK), the ET5 Touring station wagon from 7,492 SEK (benefit value: 2,607 SEK), and the larger ET7 from 7,655 SEK (benefit value: 3,670 SEK).

All offers exclude VAT and are based on a 36-month term with 10,000 km per year, including access to Nio’s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) plan.

The ET5 is listed at a base retail price of 556,000 SEK, or approximately $59,010.

According to Mobility Sweden, 27,565 new passenger cars were registered nationwide in June, up 8.5% year-on-year. Electrified vehicles accounted for 65.3% of the total, with battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) making up 39% and plug-in hybrids 26%.

So far this year, BEVs represent around 35% of new registrations—slightly below Mobility Sweden’s 40% forecast—while plug-in hybrids have exceeded expectations.

Across its five active European markets, the company sold 58 vehicles in May, up slightly from 52 in April, according to national registration data and the platform EU-EVs.

The premium EV maker, led by founder and CEO William Li, plans to enter over a dozen new European markets within the next 18 months under both the core Nio brand and its new Firefly sub-brand.

In these new markets, the company will not have a local team and retail network. Instead, and to allow a much faster and cheaper expansion, it will rely on local partners and distributors for sales and aftersales services.

Upcoming markets include Austria, Hungary, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Czech Republic, Poland, Romania, and Portugal.

In contrast, other Chinese brands posted stronger performance in Sweden in June. BYD registered 206 plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles, a 36% increase year-on-year and up 171% from May.

XPeng more than doubled its registrations to 72 units, while Zeekr sold 155 vehicles, up 400% from a year earlier.

Polestar saw a modest 2% rise to 1,010 units. Tesla sold 976 cars in Sweden last month, nearly doubling from May, though still down 64% year-on-year.

Cláudio Afonso founded CARBA in early 2021 and launched the news blog EV later that year. Following a 1.5-year hiatus, he relaunched EV in April 2024. In late 2024, he also started AV, a blog dedicated to the autonomous vehicle industry.
