Nio Sells 5 EVs in Netherlands in May, Down From 20 a Year Ago

Nio registered five electric vehicles in the Netherlands in May, extending its year-on-year sales decline in the market for a fourth consecutive month.

The premium EV maker sold 20 vehicles in the same month last year. Aside from January, Nio has posted year-over-year declines in February, March, April, and May.

May registrations included three units of the entry-level EL6 SUV, one EL8, and one ET5 sedan.

When compared over month, sales increased by three units.

The company had recorded just two vehicle registrations in April — its weakest monthly performance in the Netherlands since entering the market in October 2022.

In the first five months of 2025, Nio has registered 51 vehicles in the country, compared with 263 for the whole of 2024.

Last year, the average selling price in the Dutch market stood at €86,000 — equivalent to $98,200.

Nio offers five fully electric models in the Netherlands, including three SUVs — the EL6, EL7 and EL8 — and two sedans, the ET5 and ET7.

In an interview published last week by the local outlet BusinessWise, Nio Netherlands’ recently appointed General Manager, Tristan Hamelink, said the company is “truly starting to claim our place in the upper segment of the automotive market.”

“We started with just four people. Now we are forty, with two Nio Houses in Rotterdam and Amsterdam, the Nio Hub in Breukelen, our power swap stations, and six models on the market,” Hamelink stated.

“It felt like everything had to happen at once, but now we’re truly starting to claim our place in the upper segment of the automotive market,” the country chief added.

In mid-March, Nio announced that Ruben Keuter, its country manager, would step down by the end of the month.

Hamelink, who previously served as head of sales and operations, has taken over the role.

Commenting on the 2024 sales performance, the executive noted that Nio plays in the premium segment.

“But with an average registration value of €86,000 — not many brands can match that,” he said. “With Nio, we are in the premium segment, at the top of the market.

Nio opened in April orders in the Dutch market for the compact EV Firefly with prices starting at €29,900 — equivalent to $34,130.

Although the date for the first deliveries in the Netherlands is not yet known, Nio said test drives will begin “this Summer.”

The ET7 sedan starts at €72,233 in the Netherlands, equivalent to $82,420. Nio is currently offering a lower monthly payment with an interest rate starting from 0.99%, with the offer ending by the end June.

Additionally, the company has a €5,000 trade-in incentive for its smaller sedan, the ET5.

On its Dutch website, Nio says, “Looking for an ET7 with fast delivery? Take advantage now of an attractive purchase price for an ET7 from stock. Want to trade in a car? Then you will temporarily receive up to €5,000 when purchasing an ET5.”

The brand is also promoting its battery swapping infrastructure, with a discounted charging and swapping rate of €0.29 per kilowatt-hour, made permanent in March after initially being introduced as a temporary offer in January.

The rate reflects a 34% reduction from the previous €0.44 standard.
