Nio Rolls Out New OTA Update to Operating System in Europe

Chinese premium EV maker Nio said on Wednesday it is rolling out in Europe a new over-the-air update of its operating system, Banyan.

The update also brings improvements to the Pilot Assist system, the lane-keeping feature, and predictive speed control.

“Our Pilot Assist has also been refined to offer a more stable and comfortable driving experience on highways and country roads, including improved lane-centering and smoother steering response,” Nio said in an App post.

The company announced that the Nio App Store will allow drivers to easily browse, download, and manage all their vehicle apps in one location.

Nio’s Senior Manager of Infotainment and Product Experience, Sebastian Salera, said on LinkedIn this Thursday that the App Store is “a new distribution channel for native and third-party apps that evolves independently from our system updates.”

It will include both Nio‘s native apps — like Nomi or Navigation — and third-party ones such as Legible, an e-reading platform, and SoundCloud.

The Shanghai-based brand is offering a free trial of its Premium Infotainment program, which gives users access to web-based apps including YouTube Music, Apple Music, and Instagram.

Nomi, Nio‘s AI “co-pilot”, was improved to better respond to voice commands. It includes searching for charging stations, which can now be refined by proximity, amenities, and charger type.

Driving assistance has been improved as well, with more precise lane-centering and smoother steering response.

Nio‘s Banyan 2.4.0 operating system rolled out in January to European customers.

In April, Nio sold 52 vehicles across five European markets, down from 86 units in March, according to official national data and the EU-EVs platform.

The company said on Wednesday that it is publishing its first quarter earnings results on June 3 where the management is expected to provide guidance for second quarter vehicle sales and revenue.

Nio said in late March it expected total revenues in the first quarter to range between 12.367 billion yuan ($1.694 billion) and 12,859 million yuan ($1.762 billion) — which would represent a 24.8%—29.8% jump from a year ago.
