Nio said on Wednesday it is rolling out a new over-the-air software update for its European customers, improving charging functions, navigation, and its in-car voice assistant ‘NOMI’.
Vehicles in Europe — both current models and those on sale — continue to run on the Banyan operating system, which underpins Nio’s NT2.0 platform.
In China, most of the company’s models now operate on the newer Cedar system introduced with the ET9 last March and expanded to four facelifted NT2.5 models launched in May.
The latest update, Banyan 2.4.2, was developed specifically for European markets and introduces “more than ten upgrades,” according to the EV maker.
The 2.4.2 version marks the 19th firmware-over-the-air update since Banyan’s European debut in late 2022, totaling “nearly 450 total optimizations.”
NOMI — described by Nio as the world’s first in-car AI assistant with GPT technology — gains expanded knowledge and a new ‘Trivia’ mode covering topics such as literature, languages, space, fashion, and health.
Nio said the in-car voice assistant can now answer more conversational queries, from recommending red wines to explaining Japanese Kabuki theater.
Charging has also been refined.
The vehicle now calculates available charging power using additional data sources, providing users with more accurate and timely information.
Communication issues with Alpitronic DC fast chargers — among Europe’s most widely used — have been reduced, while the system now alerts drivers to external factors that may affect charging performance.
Navigation adds a turn bubble at upcoming junctions showing both turn direction and street name, and replaces generic road numbers with official road signs on the turn-by-turn display.
Routing logic has been improved so that when a planned road is closed and no fully drivable alternative exists, the system still offers a usable detour and clearly marks the affected section instead of displaying an error.
Other updates include the addition of an “N” (Neutral) indicator in car-wash mode, improved positioning accuracy at Nio’s Power Swap Stations through better coordination with the assisted-parking system.
It also shows a new “Public Value” section in the radio app with access to more than 100 local, regional, and national stations — in line with Germany’s Media State Treaty requirements.
The user interface can now be switched to Portuguese or French, as the EV maker prepares to arrive those markets.
Nio previously added an In-Car App Store and upgraded its Pilot Assist system in May 2025, improving lane keeping, steering, braking, and cornering.
The one-pedal driving mode was introduced a year ago with Nio saying the feature has been refined based on user feedback.
The Banyan 2.4.0 operating system rolled out in January to European customers.
