Nio Reaffirms Cooperation as China’s Auto Industry Crackdown Intensifies

Chinese EV maker Nio has issued a new statement on Friday, where it reaffirms the company’s support for China’s crackdown on online misconduct.

The update, shared on the Weibo profile of the Nio Legal Department account, also identified additional accounts accused of spreading false information about the EV maker.

The Chinese government has launched in September a national campaign to tackle online misconduct in the auto industry.

Six Chinese government agencies — including the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the Cyberspace Administration of China — have taken legal action against several social media accounts.

The enforcement campaign targets fake online content created for profit, exaggerated advertising claims, and smear efforts against rivals.

New Users Sued

According to Nio, user He Kui of the online account ‘Xigua Li Duo Nan’ has “repeatedly posted large amounts of false information on Weibo and others platforms” since 2024.

The court stated in a first-instance judgement that the actions “constituted infringement, violated core socialist values, and disrupted a clean online environment,” for which the user was ordered to publicly apologize and compensate Nio.

Additionally, the WeChat account called ‘Roadside News Agency’ was accused last month of spreading rumors about Nio‘s capital market activities.

The new update reveals that its owner was identified by the police, who “imposed penalties according to the law.”

The Douyin account ‘Brother Sen’s EV,’ which, according to the EV maker, has “since April 2023, repeatedly insulted and defamed Nio and Nio users,” had its account permanently banned.

“Even after losing a lawsuit [against the company], the account holder refused to correct the behavior,” Nio said.

Previous Statements

In mid-October, Nio flagged that user Dong Bin, who operated through the account ‘BelieveDB,’ had “continuously and intensively” posted false content regarding Nio since 2023.

A Chinese court recently ruled against Dong in the first instance, ordering him to cease the infringing activities, issue a public apology, and compensate the EV maker for damages.

Over the summer, the company sued another five accounts for “maliciously defaming the brand,” just a month after seven bloggers were sued after the company noticed “a large number of online accounts fabricating information out of thin air to attack” both its core and Onvo brands.

The EV maker opened the Nio Legal Department account on the social media platform Weibo in May 2023, aiming to fight false information on social media and protect the company’s image.

In September, founder and CEO William Li had called for tougher measures against organized online attacks that he said are damaging China’s automotive industry.

Below is the full statement by Nio Legal Department:

“Continuing to support the six-ministry special rectification campaign, Nio firmly protects the lawful rights and interests of the company and its users.

He Kui, the owner of the online account “Xigua Li Duo Nan,” has, since 2024, repeatedly posted large amounts of false information on Weibo and other platforms, maliciously attacking and defaming Nio and Nio users, seriously infringing upon their lawful rights and interests.

Recently, the court issued a first-instance judgment, ruling that his actions constituted infringement, violated core socialist values, and disrupted a clean online environment. He was ordered to immediately stop the infringing behavior, publicly apologize to Nio, and compensate Nio for economic losses.

The WeChat public account “Roadside Info Club” spread rumors related to Nio in the capital markets. After Nio reported the case, police quickly identified the account owner and have imposed penalties according to the law.

The Douyin account “Brother Sen’s EV” has, since April 2023, repeatedly insulted and defamed Nio and Nio users. Even after losing a lawsuit, the account holder refused to correct the behavior. The account has now been banned according to law and platform rules.

Nio will continue to actively respond to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and five other ministries in their special campaign to address online misconduct in the automotive industry, and will continue assisting judicial authorities in cracking down on malicious rumor creation and dissemination.

The company will use legal measures to safeguard the lawful rights and interests of the company and its users, jointly fostering a clean and orderly online environment.

Nio always prioritizes technology development and user experience, striving to deliver exceptional products and services.

We will continue to use legal tools to firmly deter all actions that infringe upon the rights and interests of Nio and its users.

Thank you again for your attention and support.
