Electric vehicle maker Nio reached on Monday 4,000 charging stations in China.

The company, known for its battery swap technology that allows drivers to receive a 90 per cent charged battery in just a few minutes, has currently 2,527 battery swap stations in the country and over 50 across its five European markets.

In December 2023, at its last annual event, the company unveiled the fourth generation of the Nio Power Charger which features a maximum voltage of 1,000 volts and a peak power of 640kW.

By the end of 2022, the EV manufacturer had 1,305 battery swap stations across China. In early 2023, Nio increased its yearly goal promising to build one thousand stations in 12 motnhs and achieved it by ending last year with 2,310 stations.

However, year to date, the company led by William Li has opened 217 of the 1,000 stations promised.

Although a ramp up in the deployment is expected in the last quarter of the year, the chief executive has recently addmitted that the goal will be delayed by “one to two months”

With over 53.6 million battery swaps provided in the last six years, Nio will build a new factory in Wuhan to support the rollout of battery swap stations.

The 20,000-square-meter facility will have the capacity to produce over 1,000 stations annually, according to CEO William Li, who unveiled the plans at the company’s annual “Power Up” event earlier this quarter.

In addition to the new factory, Nio will establish a new headquarters in Wuhan for Nio Power, its division focused on charging and battery swapping services.
