Speaking to the media at the Chengdu Auto Show, Nio co-founder and president Lihong Qin questioned the accuracy of China’s weekly car registration data, which Beijing-based competitor Li Auto publishes every Tuesday.
For the past two years, Li Auto, a new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer, has been compiling weekly registration numbers in China and sharing them on its social media platforms.
“The weekly data on mandatory insurance is not the sales data for each company. Publishing it is not encouraged or advocated under the Anti-Unfair Competition Law,” Qin said.
Never Miss an Update on Nio
The most recent set of weekly insurance registration data, covering the period from August 19 to 25, was released last Tuesday and showed that Nio insured 4,600 units, an increase of 39% from the previous week.
In late July, at the NioIN tech day, the co-founder had already criticized the publication of the weekly registrations.
Earlier today, Nio announced it delivered 20,176 units last month, marking the fourth consecutive month of exceeding the 20,000-unit threshold.
The figures represent an increase of 4.38 per cent from a year ago and a decrease of 1.57 percent from the previous month, when it delivered 20,498 vehicles.
