Nio on Track for 15-Month Norway High as December Registrations Surge

Nio Group has registered 108 vehicles in Norway through the first three weeks of December, approaching monthly totals from three years ago — according to data from tracking platform Elbilstatistikk.

With three weeks logged, December registrations have nearly doubled the company’s strongest month of 2025, when Nio recorded 63 vehicles.

The Shanghai-based EV maker first entered Europe via Norway in late 2021, months after the founder and CEO William Li promised to expand to 25 countries and regions by 2025.

As of December 22, the main Nio brand accounted for 72 units, while the Firefly sub-brand contributed 36.

Firefly began deliveries in Norway and the Netherlands in mid-August with several other European countries following over the past few months.

With more than a week remaining in the month, year-end promotions and expiring government incentives are driving sales higher.

To clear inventory of its ET5 Touring, EL6, and EL8 models, the EV maker is offering a 1.99% interest rate on all Nio models until December 31.

In addition, it has reduced the price of its Firefly debut model by 50,000 NOK (around $4,910) in a ‘Pre-Christmas Offer’ valid until December 14.

Sales of the Nio and Firefly brands are also jumping across other European markets, including the Netherlands and Sweden.

Sales Performance in Norway

In December 2022, the company sold a total of 142 vehicles in the Nordic market, following 141 in the prior month.

This time, however, monthly figures so far nearly tripled the vehicles registered in November (38 units).

Nio’s strongest sales month in the country was October 2024, with 184 vehicles registered.

Since the beginning of 2023, the brand’s monthly sales in Norway have mostly remained below 100 units, with October standing out as a notable exception.

Excluding that month, Nio‘s average monthly sales in 2024 would have been 63 units. Including October, the average rises to 73 units per month.

Considering the first eleven months of 2025, the company has registered an average of 34 vehicles per month.

Earlier this month, a spokesperson for the group said Firefly‘s sales target in Norway was cut to “around 200” units from the 500 the brand aimed to sell this year.

The 500-unit guidance was part of the broader 1,500 vehicles that the country manager An Ho said the company — including both Nio and Firefly — was targeting in Norway for 2025.

As of December 22, and according to Elbilstatistikk, the company has registered a total of 59 Firefly units and 440 Nio vehicles.

Last week, Nio announced that Vianor Leangen, based in Trodheim, has become its newest authorized service partner in Norway.

The car service and tire shop in Trondheim will begin operations for Nio starting January 1.

Norway EV Incentives

Norway is the world’s leading country when it comes to EV adoption — after it set an ambitious target of having all new vehicles sold by the end of 2025 to be fully electric or hybrid.

Soon after the country reached a record 98.3% of new vehicle sales being electric, Norway announced plans to eliminate subsidies for these cars.

The Norwegian government plans to begin collecting VAT on several versions of mid-market vehicles starting from 2026.

The price threshold that qualifies for the exemption will drop from NOK 500,000 (€42,630) to NOK 300,000 (€25,580), with the VAT exemption to be completely removed by 2027.

Nio‘s models are priced above the threshold, with only Firefly remaining eligible for the upcoming year, with its original price of NOK 279,900.

Competitors

Tesla has registered 5,663 vehicles in Norway in the first 22 days of December.

Last month, the company set a new record in monthly registrations with 6,215 electric vehicles sold there.

Chinese automaker XPeng, which sells its fully electric G6 and G9 SUVs in Norway, has already registered 706 vehicles so far this month, surpassing November’s total of 529.

Meanwhile, Chinese giant BYD has seen registrations surge fourfold, rising from 172 units in November to 780 in the first three weeks of this month.

The brand offers both hybrid and fully electric vehicles.
