Shanghai-based Nio Group has more than doubled the number of EVs exported to international markets in October as it prepares to launch in several new markets.
The figures were revealed by China’s Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on Tuesday, which does not provide a breakdown of deliveries by model or brand.
The numbers cover exports of Nio‘s premium brand, the family-oriented Onvo, and the newly launched Firefly, all of which are currently being introduced to new markets.
The company has officially launched in Austria and Greece in the last few days, two of the three countries it said last week would open orders “soon.”
The remaining country is Portugal, where orders are expected to open later this month.
In all these three countries, Nio is entering with both the main marque and Firefly.
Onvo is expected to follow, as the company announced last week that the sub-brand would be launched in Europe in 2027.
Nio, which entered its first overseas markets using a direct-to-consumer model, is now shifting to a dealership-based strategy in newer regions as it looks to boost demand and lower fixed costs.
Export Figures
From August to October, Nio exported a total of 825 vehicles.
After shipping 98 vehicles in March, the company did not send a new batch of EVs until August.
A significant portion of the company’s sales in European markets in the past months has likely been from existing inventory, as Nio continues to work through the remaining stock of 2023 model year units.
The premium brand is also struggling with weak demand in its first European markets — Sweden, Norway, the Netherlands and Germany.
Since the November 2021 debut in the Norwegian market, Nio has sold about 5,000 units — according to its founder and CEO William Li.
Firefly Overseas
On August 14, the first Firefly units were delivered in Norway and the Netherlands.
As of October 31, official national association data show that 40 Firefly vehicles have been delivered in the two countries.
Last week, Firefly said deliveries have also started in Belgium, where it launched recently, and Denmark, where it is re-entering with a dealership business model after weaker-than-expected sales.
On the same day, the brand teased its expansion to North America for the first time.
Onvo Spotted Outside of China
Last week, the first batch of Onvo vehicles for overseas markets arrived in Uzbekistan, making it the first international market where the family-focused sub-brand will be available.
The Onvo L60 is one of the models that the company is introducing in the market, alongside the Nio ET5 and ET5 Touring sedans and the ES8 and ES6 SUVs.
Nio is also expected to enter several additional countries next year, including Costa Rica, Singapore, Romania, Czechia, Poland, and Luxembourg.
Last month, EV exclusively reported that the Group would also be entering Armenia, which was confirmed by the brand a few days later.
