Nio Launches Vehicle API in Europe to Enable Third-Party Integration

EV maker Nio has introduced a Vehicle Application Programming Interface (API) in Europe. The API is free for partners and gives access to vehicle data and functions, allowing them to develop applications and then integrate with Nio vehicles.

The available attributes are split across five areas including Vehicle Profile, Location Data, Vehicle Details, Charging Status, and Control Charging.

In the pilot phase, Nio worked with two partners such as Enode—to connect the car with smart home ecosystems and optimize energy management—and Tronity, on battery monitoring and cost tracking.

Drivers across Nio’s five European markets can link their vehicles to partner platforms once they integrate the API without additional hardware or costs.

“Nio users must log in, review data packages, and provide consent for data sharing and vehicle control,” the company said in a statement. “This ensures owners maintain control over their data and application access.”

Last November, the company completed 100,000 battery swaps in Europe, approximately 20 months after launching its first station outside China in Norway.

Similar to what it offers to customers in China, Nio announced a monthly battery upgrade option across four of its five European markets to upgrade or downgrade between the standard-range 75 kWh battery to a 100 kWh battery at its swap stations.
