The Shanghai-headquartered Nio Group saw its sales reach a new record in August with 31,305 vehicles delivered across its three brands, up 52% from July and 59% higher than a year earlier.
The tally included 10,525 units from its core premium Nio brand, 16,434 vehicles from the family-focused Onvo sub-brand, and 4,346 units from the entry-level Firefly marque.
It was the company’s highest monthly result since its founding in 2014, surpassing the previous record of 31,138 units reached last December, when Firefly had not yet begun deliveries.
Despite the overall record, sales of the main Nio brand declined both sequentially and year over year, down from 12,675 units in July.
Onvo more than doubled from 5,976 units in July, while Firefly rose from 2,366 to 4,346 units.
To stimulate demand for its flagship lineup, the company announced last week at the Chengdu Auto Show that all Nio-brand vehicles will now come equipped with the larger 100 kWh battery as standard, while keeping starting prices unchanged from the smaller 75 kWh version — an indirect price cut designed to lift volumes.
Onvo was the primary growth engine in August, accounting for more than half of total sales.
The brand, aimed at family buyers, is anchored by the five-seat SUV L60 and the six/seven-seat SUV L90, which has delivered over 10,000 units since the first day of August.
Analysts at Deutsche Bank had forecast about 32,000 deliveries in August, with 11,000 for Nio, 17,000 for Onvo and 4,000 for Firefly. The final figures came in broadly in line with those expectations.
Nio founder and chief executive William Li said in early June that both the Nio and Onvo marques are targeting around 25,000 monthly sales in the fourth quarter, which would bring group deliveries to roughly 150,000 excluding Firefly.
An update on the target is expected during the company’s second quarter earnings conference call scheduled for this Tuesday, September 2.
Deutsche Bank cited last week dealer feedback saying new order flow in August estimated to surge 120% month on month to 57,000 units.
Orders were split between about 15,000 for Nio, 40,000 for Onvo and 2,000 for Firefly, according to data first reported by CnEVPost.
Year-to-date deliveries stood at 166,472, up 30% compared with the same period in 2024.
The growth trails behind the ambitious target set late last year of doubling deliveries to about 440,000 units in 2025.
Later this month, the company founded and led by William Li will host its annual event in Hangzhou.
At the event, the new ES8 SUV will be officially launched. Last week, Nio‘s co-founder and president said the model has surpassed the L90’s number of pre-orders.
