Nio Germany Sales Fall 34% YoY in August Despite Rising EV Adoption

Data from Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) showed on Wednesday that Nio registered 23 electric vehicles in the country last month.

Sales dropped by 34.3% compared to August 2024 and halved from the 47 units sold in July — when the brand had set its highest monthly registrations since April 2024.

Last month, 39,367 fully electric vehicles were registered in Germany, from a total of 207,229 cars across all powertrains — representing 19% of the market.

The share of EVs in Europe’s largest auto market increased by 45.7% compared to last year and rose 0.6 percentage points compared to the previous month.

Despite this overall growth in EV adoption, Nio‘s monthly sales continue to decline compared to 2024.

Between January 1 and August 31, Nio sold 191 vehicles in Europe’s largest auto market — a plunge of 36.5% compared to the first eight months of the prior year.

In the full year of 2024, the company registered 398 vehicles in the country — already a steep 68.5% drop from the 1,263 units sold in 2023.

In early July, Nio set new incentives for its two entry-level models in the country, following a previous flexible subscription campaign announced in June.

Nio was offering 0% financing in early July for its ET5 and ET5 Touring models, with the promotion available through the end of August.

The offer applied exclusively to existing inventory vehicles, as the brand continues to clear stock across its five European markets.

In Europe, Nio currently operates in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden.

Last month, the brand registered 29 vehicles in Sweden, reaching a new record since it expanded to the Nordic country in October 2022. The result was also driven by a major campaign on the ET5 sedan.

The brand has recently debuted in Belgium — one of the more than a dozen new European markets it will enter over the next 18 months, with both the Nio marque and the Firefly brand.

The company has not announced when the first test drives and Firefly deliveries will take place in the German market. Deliveries in Europe started last month in both Norway and the Netherlands.

The Nio Group set an all time record for the company’s global deliveries with over 31,300 units handed over worldwide in August.

The company disclosed its second quarter earnings results on Tuesday, reporting slightly lower quarterly losses for the second quarter of the year as cost reduction measures continue.

The company reiterated the goal of achieving its first profitable quarter by Q4.
