Nio ET9 Sales Drop for Second Consecutive Month

Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio delivered 307 units of its flagship ET9 sedan in June, extending a decline in monthly volumes for the second consecutive month.

According to data released on Wednesday by the China Passenger Car Association, ET9 registrations fell 55.0% in June from 682 units in May.

The Shanghai-based EV maker commenced deliveries of its flagship ET9 sedan in China on March 29, its most advanced and highest-priced model to date.

In the last three days of March, the brand delivered 89 units of the sedan. In its first full month in the market, 810 ET9s were handed over by Nio — the highest monthly figures year to date.

The reason for the decline is not clear as the company could have chosen to prioritise sales of other models to reach the low end of its second quarter guidance.

The Group delivered 72,056 vehicles between April and June — 56 units above the low end of the guidance provided in early June.

The ET9 is available through Nio’s battery-as-a-service (BaaS) programme, which lowers the starting price to 660,000 yuan ($92,000) for customers leasing the battery separately.

With the battery included, the four-seat sedan is priced at 788,000 yuan ($109,800) — more than twice the starting price of the ES6 SUV, Nio’s best-selling model, which begins at 338,000 yuan ($47,100).

Launched at Nio’s annual event in December — which will be held earlier than usual this year, with the new ES8 launch — the ET9 sold out its 999-unit First Edition within 12 hours.

The version was priced at 818,000 yuan ($114,000).

The sedan features what Nio calls its most advanced suite of technologies to date, including its Shenji NX9031 autonomous driving chip.

It also has an integrated hydraulic fully active suspension, steer-by-wire system, a next-generation digital cockpit, and a high-end audio setup.

Since deliveries started in March, 1,888 ET9s were delivered in China.

In June, the Shanghai-based company sold more ET5 Touring sedans than ES6 SUVs for the first time since mid-2023, when the wagon was launched.

The ET5T accounted for 5,103 of the units delivered by the brand in June, recovering from a slight dip in May, when it dropped below 3,000 monthly units.

The mid-sized ET5 sedan’s deliveries slightly rose month over month from 1,564 to 1,643 vehicles.

Despite a larger growth in April — to 2,015 units — and a subsequent drop, the model’s figures have been progressively and slowly growing since the beginning of the year.

Nio launched the updated ES6 and EC6 SUVs in mid-May and immediately started deliveries of the models.

The ES6 represented 4,415 vehicles. Monthly registrations of the SUV peaked in April, going above 4,000 for the first time since the year began — with 6,866 units. Deliveries then fell sequentially in May (5,479) and June.

The EC6 followed a similar pattern — last month, Nio delivered 1,932 units of its coupe SUV, down from May’s 2,026 and April’s 2,437 vehicles.

The ES8 made up 839 of the vehicles rolled out last month. It also the first time registrations went above 600 units in six months. Registrations nearly tripled from May’s 292 units.

Deliveries of the executive sedan ET7 reached 271 units, up from the 207 vehicles sold in May.

EC7 numbers keep declining, with June being its second sequential drop — 84 vehicles of the crossover were rolled out. The luxury mid-size ES7 registered no deliveries in June.
