Nio has pledged 2 million yuan ($278,600) to support relief efforts in northern China after torrential rains triggered deadly floods and landslides across several provinces, including the capital Beijing.
Chinese authorities said at least 30 people have been confirmed dead, while more than 80,000 residents in the capital have been relocated.
The EV maker said in a statement on Tuesday that it will coordinate with its user community and the China Charity Federation to provide funds for “emergency procurement of essential supplies for affected communities, as well as rescue equipment and infrastructure restoration.”
The death toll rose sharply after severe downpours lashed Beijing and surrounding areas over the weekend.
State broadcaster CCTV reported that 28 of the fatalities occurred in Miyun, a mountainous district in northeastern Beijing where over 21 inches (533 mm) of rain had fallen by midnight.
Average rainfall across the capital exceeded six inches (152 mm), overwhelming drainage systems and prompting mass evacuations.
Li Auto said it had donated 10 million yuan ($1.4 million) to the Beijing Charity Association to fund “emergency rescue, relief for affected residents, and post-disaster reconstruction.”
Xiaomi Foundation, meanwhile, committed 5 million yuan in cash and 350,000 yuan worth of emergency supplies, including power banks, radios, walkie-talkies, and smartphones, to support local rescue operations.
Beijing authorities activated a top-level emergency response on Monday evening, instructing residents to remain indoors, shutting down schools, halting construction projects, and suspending outdoor tourism and related activities until further notice.
“We will continue to monitor the heavy rainfall disaster and the progress of relief efforts, working with all parties to contribute to safeguarding people’s lives, property, and long-term community reconstruction,” Nio said.
The company also reiterated its belief that “only good values can lead a company and an industry to go further,” while expressing hope that affected areas would “overcome the challenges soon.”
Below is the full translated statement released by Nio on Tuesday.
“Recently, continuous heavy rainfall in East China, North China, and Northeast China has triggered severe flooding and geological disasters, causing casualties and property damage in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, as well as in Jilin and Shandong provinces.
In response, NIO has urgently donated 2 million yuan in partnership with the NIO User Trust’s Public Welfare Foundation and the China Charity Federation. The funds will be used to support emergency procurement of essential supplies for affected communities, as well as rescue equipment and infrastructure restoration, helping disaster-hit residents overcome difficulties and rebuild their homes.
The “NIO Climate Action for Public Good” initiative was jointly launched by NIO, the NIO User Trust Public Welfare Foundation, and the China Charity Federation. It aims to support disaster prevention and relief efforts arising from global climate change and environmental issues. We will continue to monitor the heavy rainfall disaster and progress of relief efforts, working with all parties to contribute to safeguarding people’s lives, property, and long-term community reconstruction.
We hope those in the disaster-hit regions can overcome the challenges soon — let’s power through together!
