Nio Anticipates its Annual Product Event as it Prepares Launch of Refreshed ES8

Chinese EV maker Nio announced on Thursday that it will move its annual product showcase, ‘Nio Day,’ to the fall — marking the first time the event will not be held at the end of the year or in early January since it began in 2017.

The company said on a post in the Nio app that “based on this feedback and after communicating with some members of the community, we’ve decided to hold Nio Day 2025 in the autumn.”

The event has traditionally taken place in December in recent years.

Last year, EV was invited by Nio to attend the event where the ET9 flagship sedan and the Firefly sub-brand were officially launched.

The Shanghai-based brand cited the fall’s “mild and comfortable weather,” a “better alignment” with product launches and “venue availability and regional options” as reasons for the change.

Nio further announced that “due to the schedule adjustment” and the “shorter preparation timeline,” it will “suspend the city bidding process” — meaning it will not allow different cities to apply or compete to host the event this year.

“The organizing committee will determine the host city based on venue availability, climate, and overall planning,” the company added.

The event, which was usually held by year-end, will now coincide with the launch of the revamped ES8 model, which was revealed last month in a MIIT regulatory filing.

The seven-seat ES8 SUV was Nio’s debut production model, first launched in 2018. Its new iteration is scheduled to be launched in the final quarter of the year.

The third-generation ES8 will also likely be available in a five-seat trim, as the brand is discontinuing its ES7 five-seat SUV.

According to the filing, the new ES8 will feature Nio’s in-house developed autonomous driving chip.

It will be equipped with Nio’s “AQUILA Super Sensing System”, featuring a lookout-tower front LiDAR, dual wide-angle side LiDARs and 4D imaging radar.

The SUV will use a dual-motor all-wheel drive system with a maximum combined output of 520 kW.

Nio announced on Tuesday that June deliveries from its main brand fell 31.2% year over year to 14,593, despite a 10% increase sequentially. In the second quarter, a total of 47,132 vehicles were rolled out.

Its sub-brand Onvo delivered 6,400 EVs in June, totaling 17,081 units in the April-June period.

The recently launched Firefly, which started deliveries in late April, registered 3,932 vehicles in June and 3,680 in May.

The company said it expected vehicle deliveries of the three brands combined to range between 72,000 and 75,000 units — the Nio Group delivered 72,056 vehicles from April 1 to June 30.

“Dear NIO Users and Friends,

NIO Day, our annual gathering of the NIO brand and its user community, has become a cherished tradition since its inaugural event in 2017.

Each year, hundreds of thousands of community members participate deeply—from bidding to voting and ultimately attending the event.

Together, we’ve shared an extraordinary journey and witnessed the debut of NIO’s most significant products.

Throughout this journey, we’ve received a wealth of feedback from users, touching on aspects such as the bidding process, event timing, and the desire to better align NIO Day with the launch rhythm of our new products.

Based on this feedback and after communicating with some members of the community, we’ve decided to hold NIO Day 2025 in the autumn. Here’s why:

1. A more pleasant season for gatherings
Autumn offers mild and comfortable weather, allowing users to fully enjoy the event in an ideal climate, turning every moment together into a cherished memory.

2. Greater flexibility in venue and location choices
With more venue availability and regional options, more friends will have the chance to attend in person. Hosting the event outside of December also avoids overlap with Christmas, making it easier for our international users to participate.

3. Better alignment with our major product launches
This year marks the return of our luxury, full-size 3-row flagship SUV—the third-generation ES8. There’s no better stage for its debut than NIO Day.

The specific date for NIO Day 2025 will be announced at a later time.

This shift marks a new experiment. We’ll gather insights from this experience and continue to explore the best timing and format for future NIO Day events together with our community.

Due to the schedule adjustment for NIO Day 2025 and the resulting shorter preparation timeline and greater complexity in resource coordination, we will suspend the city bidding process for this year’s event.

The organizing committee will determine the host city based on venue availability, climate, and overall planning.

In 2026, we’ll refine the bidding mechanism with input and suggestions from everyone.

What we’re changing is the timing. What we’re upgrading is the experience. What remains unchanged is our commitment to co-creation and sharing with you all.

More exciting details about NIO Day 2025 will be revealed soon, so stay tuned.”
