Nio Announces Expansion to Seven New European Markets With Dealership Model

EV maker Nio announced on Tuesday that it is expanding to seven new European markets over the next 18 months.

The premium brand entered Europe via Norway in September 2021 and entered four new markets — Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Norway — a year later.

Until the end of 2026, the Shanghai-based Group will enter Belgium, Luxembourg, Austria, Hungary, Czech Republic, Poland, and Romania with both its Nio and Firefly brands.

Onvo, Nio’s family-focused sub-brand launched in China in 2024, is not currently scheduled for introduction in Europe.

William Li, the company’s founder and CEO, had announced in April that the newly launched brand Firefly would be present across 16 countries by the year end.

Nio will partner with Hedin Mobility Group in Belgium and Luxembourg later this year.

The Group has previously partnered with other Chinese new energy vehicle (NEV) makers such as XPeng, BYD, and Hongqi.

Over the next few months, Nio also plans to enter Austria and Hungary through a partnership with AutoWallis, which will also support its expansion into the Czech Republic, Poland, and Romania scheduled for 2026.

“By pursuing a well-considered, multi-channel strategy, Nio will increase its reach across Europe while continuing to build on its established direct-to-consumer business and service network in key regions,” the company said in a statement.

The company said it will announce “further news” for selected European markets “in the coming weeks.”

In the new European markets, Nio’s brand line-up will include the entry-level SUV EL6 (known as ES6 in China), the flagship SUV EL8, the cheapest sedan ET5 and its station wagon version, the ET5 Touring.

Compared to the existing markets, Nio will not sell its sedan and SUV from the ‘7 series’ — the ET7 and the EL7 models.

In April, Nio sold 52 vehicles across five European markets, down from 86 units in March, according to official national data and the EU-EVs platform.

Sales included 29 vehicles in Norway, 19 in Germany, two each in the Netherlands and Sweden, and none in Denmark. As of Tuesday, official data for May had not yet been released for all five European markets where Nio operates.

Thijs Meijling, Nio’s Head of Europe Business, said the region “is a core pillar of our global strategy and a region where we see tremendous potential for smart, user-centric mobility.”

“Our expansion follows a clear principle: we focus on markets where our integrated service and product landscape can unfold its full potential and deliver tangible value to users,” Meijling stated.

“With a scalable business model driven by digital innovation and a multi-brand portfolio that addresses both premium and urban segments, we are setting new standards for what smart mobility in Europe can be – intelligent, flexible and built around users’ needs.”

Nio registered five electric vehicles in the Netherlands in May, extending its year-on-year sales decline in the market for a fourth consecutive month.

In Sweden, the brand sold two units last month.

The company will report its first quarter earnings results later this Monday, with the conference call scheduled for 8:00 AM Eastern time.
