Nio and Firefly Brands Officially Launch in Greece, Onvo Expected for 2027

Shanghai-headquartered Nio Group held on Monday its official launch event in Greece.

Last week, the EV maker had said that orders for the Greek, the Austrian and the Portuguese markets would open “soon.”

Nio held a launch event in Vienna last week with the debut in Portugal now imminent.

Expansion to Greece

For the Greek market, Nio has partnered with Motodynamics Group to be its exclusive dealership in the country, but also in Cyprus and Bulgaria starting from 2026.

As done in several other new European markets, the company decided to limit the number of models it is offering.

The EV maker’s initial lineup includes debut model of its sub-brand Firefly, the Nio EL6 (sold as ES6 in China), the second generation EL8 SUV, the ET5 sedan, and its station wagon variant, the ET5 Touring.

Nio will not offer its larger and more expensive 7 Series vehicles — the ET7 sedan and EL7 SUV — in Austria.

Firefly began deliveries in Europe in mid-August, starting with Norway and the Netherlands.

The sub-brand Onvo is only planned to arrive on the Old Continent in 2027.

Nio had a soft launch in Greece last August.

The company opened a pop-up store at the Golden Hall shopping mall in Athens, showcasing the Nio EL6 model, the entry-level SUV of the premium brand.

Later, it switched the model for the Firefly hatchback.

Nio’s International Expansion

The company expanded to Norway in late 2021 marking its first international market.

Since then, it has arrived in Israel, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, and the United Arab Emirates.

Nio will begin sales in 20 new countries through local dealerships next year.

New markets include Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, and Romania.

Nio‘s exports have more than doubled sequentially in October to 431 units. The company is expected to increase the shipments to Europe over the next months as it enters new markets.

Management Shift

EV has recently exclusively reported that Benjamin Steinmetz, a key figure in Nio‘s product experience strategy for the European and MENA regions, has resigned.

Nicola Marsala, Nio‘s Southern Europe region chief, has also recently left the company.

Cláudio Afonso founded CARBA in early 2021 and launched the news blog EV later that year. Following a 1.5-year hiatus, he relaunched EV in April 2024. In late 2024, he also started AV, a blog dedicated to the autonomous vehicle industry.
