Nio’s Firefly Brand to Start Deliveries ‘Soon’ in 5 EU Markets, Bringing Total to 8

Firefly, the second sub-brand of Chinese EV maker Nio, said Tuesday it will “soon” begin deliveries in five additional European markets, expanding its footprint to eight countries.

The Shanghai-based brand unveiled its debut model last December during Nio‘s annual event and began deliveries in China five months later.

Nio‘s sub-brand will start deliveries in Denmark, Greece, Austria, Portugal and Luxembourg “soon”, adding to its existing presence in the Netherlands, Norway and Belgium.

The company held the official media launch events in Greece and Austria earlier this month.

The expansion comes as Firefly begins mass production of right-hand-drive (RHD) vehicles for Asian markets including Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau.

“Up to now, deliveries have been launched successively in the Netherlands, Norway, and Belgium, and test drives and deliveries will soon begin in Denmark, Greece, Austria, Portugal, and Luxembourg,” Firefly wrote on the Chinese social media platform.

The company did not provide specific timing for the new market launches or initial delivery targets for the five countries.

Right-Hand-Drive Production Begins

Firefly announced Tuesday that mass production of right-hand-drive vehicles has commenced in Hefei, Anhui province.

The first batch will be shipped to Singapore, with deliveries in Macau and Hong Kong planned for the upcoming weeks.

The brand said it is planning expansion into additional right-hand-drive markets including the United Kingdom, Thailand and Australia, with rollouts scheduled for 2026.

Firefly also stated it “will enter more countries in the future” without providing specific details on markets or timing.

Pricing and Model Details

The Firefly compact electric vehicle starts at 119,800 yuan ($16,850) in China and is priced from €29,990 ($34,700) in the Netherlands and Austria.

In Norway, the model begins at 279,900 Norwegian kroner, equivalent to approximately $27,650.

The brand launched deliveries in its first two European markets — the Netherlands and Norway — in August, with Belgium following several weeks ago.

Performance Variants Under Consideration

Daniel Jin, chief of Nio Group‘s Firefly sub-brand, recently told YouTuber Bjørn Nyland that the brand is considering a performance variant for a second-generation model potentially launching in 2027, though not for the current vehicle.

“For this generation, we don’t have it on the agenda,” Jin said, adding that “we’re thinking about the next generation two years later.”

He indicated Firefly is considering “putting a bigger motor into this vehicle” to create an AMG-style performance version, referencing Mercedes-Benz AG’s high-performance brand.

China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology catalogue revealed Monday that Firefly has filed for a higher-power version of its debut model featuring 120 kilowatts of peak power output, compared with 105 kilowatts in the standard model.

The variant maintains a top speed of 150 kilometers per hour and continues using lithium iron phosphate batteries supplied by Sunwoda.

Firefly is not planning an all-wheel-drive version of the current model, which Jin said is designed as a city car where rear-wheel drive “should be good enough for this small-sized vehicle.”

Battery Options

The brand is studying whether to offer a longer-range battery option in Europe following customer feedback. Jin said during a recent European trip he “heard a lot of voices from customers asking for a longer-range battery.”

The current model offers up to 330 kilometers of range with a 42-kilowatt-hour battery pack.

Nio founder and CEO William Li mentioned earlier this month that Firefly is considering a long-range variant with a larger battery capable of delivering 500 to 600 kilometers of range.
