Nio’s Brand Firefly to Launch New Edition on March 20 Amid Struggles to Lift Demand

Nio‘s sub-brand Firefly teased on Thursday a new edition of its debut model, as the cheapest brand under the Group continues to struggle with demand.

The variant, built around a green colour theme, will launch on Friday (March 20), the company said on Chinese social media.

“‘Rebirth Green’ is about to make a refreshed debut,” Firefly wrote, describing the color as “inspired by the vibrant vitality found in mountains and wilderness.”

The brand has not yet disclosed full specifications or pricing for the edition, confirming only that it will be available exclusively in the new colour.

“‘Rebirth Green’ is about to undergo a brand-new evolution — from an everyday classic, leaping into a special expression, becoming the exclusive exterior color of a special edition,” the post read.

Nio‘s entry-level marque stated that the color “has won the hearts and choices of countless Firefly fans.”

According to images shared on Weibo by user ‘6腾飞’, the new edition will feature a dual-tone color scheme.

Previous Editions

Firefly was launched in December 2024 with deliveries starting in April 2025.

At the time, Nio offered only the standard Firefly EV, which debuted with a starting price of 119,800 yuan ($17,400) in China, with a higher trim at 125,800 yuan ($18,300) — both including the battery.

Under Nio‘s Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) rental model, prices drop to 79,800 yuan ($11,600) and 85,800 yuan ($12,500) respectively, with a monthly battery fee of 399 yuan ($60).

Four months later, the brand introduced its first special edition — the Nomadic Maillard — on August 25, 2025.

Priced from 133,800 yuan with battery included, it was limited to just 333 units.

The “Maillard” style refers to layering different shades of brown to create a warm, pleasant, and energetic aesthetic, featuring a low-saturation color scheme with exclusive decals and wheel designs.

It also included exclusive interior ambient lighting. The edition sold out within 30 hours.

Following that success, Firefly launched the Night Creature Special Edition in October 2025, starting at 136,800 yuan.

Production was capped at 666 units, with deliveries beginning on October 23.

The most recent edition was launched in honour of the Chinese New Year, with Nio releasing special editions across both its Onvo and Firefly sub-brands.

The Pegasus Rhapsody, launched in January, was capped at just 99 units worldwide and co-created with Dutch contemporary artist Jordy van den Nieuwendijk.

It was priced at 95,800 yuan under the BaaS plan — a 20% premium over the standard BaaS price.

Sales Figures

Firefly delivered 2,657 vehicles in February, a 5.3% drop from the 2,807 units delivered in January.

February represented the brand’s second-worst monthly result since its first full month of deliveries in May 2025.

The Chinese New Year holiday period typically weighs on both production and sales, making February one of the weakest months of the year.

This year’s holiday was three days longer than 2025’s — the longest on record according to the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) — reducing the month to just 16 working days.

Since last April, monthly deliveries grew consecutively month-over-month, peaking at over 7,000 units in December.

Over roughly eight months of deliveries, the brand accumulated 39,414 units, representing 12% of total Nio Group deliveries.

Despite being the group’s most affordable brand, Firefly still accounts for a small share of total vehicles delivered by the Shanghai-based EV maker.

Last month, the group — which also includes its main premium marque and the family-oriented Onvo brand — delivered 20,797 vehicles, a 57.6% increase year-over-year.

Nio has recently opened its first multi-brand store in China, as it aims to boost brand awareness for Onvo and Firefly while reducing fixed costs.

Global Reach

Founder and CEO William Li wrote to employees earlier this year that “Firefly serves as our pioneering brand for global market entry.”

“In China, our lineup is ‘Nio, Onvo, Firefly,’ while globally it is ‘Firefly, Onvo, Nio,'” he added.

Firefly debuted in Europe in mid-August, with deliveries starting in the Netherlands and Norway.

The brand has since expanded to Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Austria, and Portugal, with Luxembourg following.

The company began mass-producing right-hand drive Firefly vehicles in November, with the first units destined for Singapore.

While Singapore marks Firefly‘s first right-hand-drive deliveries, Macau became the first right-hand-drive market where the brand began taking orders late last year.

Firefly launched in Thailand earlier this month; the UK, Australia, and New Zealand are expected to follow.

The expansion targets markets where Chinese-produced EVs face no import duties — a strategic contrast to Europe, where tariffs have applied since late 2024.

Firefly delivered four vehicles in Greece last month, out of a total of nine for the Nio Group, according to official registration data published on Wednesday.

The group’s sales across its European markets — excluding Hungary, which only reports quarterly figures — continue to decline despite the introduction of the Firefly sub-brand and the expansion into new markets.

EV learned earlier this month that Nio had quietly overhauled most of its European management structure in February.
