Firefly to Begin First Test Drives in the Netherlands on July 7

Firefly, the European-focused sub-brand of Chinese electric vehicle maker Nio, will begin customer test drives in the Netherlands on July 7, according to the company’s online booking platform.

Test drives will be available at three locations: the Nio Houses in central Amsterdam and Rotterdam, and the Nio Hub in Utrecht. Each session lasts 90 minutes, with time slots available daily from 10:00 to 19:30.

Developed at Nio’s global design centre in Munich, Firefly was formally unveiled last December and is positioned as the brand’s most affordable model, targeting rivals such as BMW’s MINI and Mercedes-Benz’s Smart.

It was designed specifically for European consumers.

Orders opened in the Netherlands earlier this year, with pricing from €29,900 ($35,330). Nio has not yet disclosed an official date for the first deliveries in the Dutch market.

In Norway, Nio’s other launch market for Firefly, test drives are set to begin during the summer, with first deliveries expected in the fall.

Norwegian pricing starts at NOK 279,900 ($27,960), benefiting from the absence of import tariffs — unlike in the European Union, where Firefly faces a combined 31% duty due to both existing EU rules and provisional anti-subsidy measures imposed last October.

Separately, Nio said on Monday it had received three awards at the 2025 German Brand Award, including two for Firefly: “Newcomer of the Year” and “Best of Best” in the “Transport & Mobility” category.

In China, Firefly delivered 3,932 vehicles in June — up from the 3,680 units delivered in May, the first full month of production for the newly launched brand.
