Nikola started on Thursday a new round of layoffs, less than one and a half years after cutting 23 percent of its workforce in Arizona.

A Freightwaves report claimed on Friday the layoffs affected “about 135 employees, roughly 15 percent of its workforce”.

Over the last few days, several affected employees shared the news on LinkedIn with one of them saying, “Today I faced an unexpected turn of events as I was laid off from Nikola Corporation”.

When contacted by EV, Nikola confirmed the layoff saying it is “adjusting and rescaling our staffing needs”.

Asked about the number of employees affected, the company did not immediately respond.

Nikola’s chief executive Steve Girsky, stated, “Nikola is a pioneer in the zero-emissions trucking and hydrogen infrastructure solution arenas, and to ensure long-term viability and maintain our first-mover advantage, we must scale our business appropriately for the future”.

“To extend our runway, we are adjusting and rescaling our staffing needs. This is a difficult, but necessary, decision and we thank those team members who helped build Nikola and wish them the best moving forward,” the CEO added.

In June 2023, Nikola announced the layoff of 270 employees representing roughly 23 percent of its workforce. At the time, about 900 employees remained at the company.

As of the end of September, the company had sold 200 units of its hydrogen fuel cell truck after selling 88 units in the third quarter, a new record for the Phoenix-based company.

The sales performance in the third quarter represented a growth of 22 percent from the 72 units registered between April and June.
