Lucid’s China Chief Steps Down as Expansion Plans Ease

The managing director of Lucid Motors in China, Zhu Jiang, has just left the company after nearly two years to lead Genesis operations in the world’s biggest automotive market.

Jiang joined the Arizona-based electric vehicle (EV) maker in September 2022 when the company had several positions open on its website for the Chinese market.

At the time, the company was hiring for several departments including hardware engineering, supply chain, retail, logistics, digital, and legal — as reported in late 2022 by CnEVpost.

As of the time of writing, the company’s website has dozens of positions open across several countries but none of them are in China.

From early 2017 until March 2020, Jiang served at the Shanghai-headquartered company Nio as a vice-president of User Development, equivalent to the marketing department.

In September 2023, Lucid’s vice-president of Product, Eric Bach, revealed that the entry into the Chinese market was “something we are exploring, and we are investing in.”

Speaking to CNBC at the 2023 IAA in Munich, Bach added that Lucid hasn’t set a market entry date yet “because we just need to get it right,” adding that “If you enter China on the wrong terms, you can make a lot of mistakes.”

In late 2021, CEO Peter Rawlinson said the company was aiming to have plants in the Middle East region — already achieved with the Saudi Arabia assembly plant — and in China.

“By mid-decade, we plan to have plants in the Middle East and China, as well,” he said.

Lucid Motors is reporting its second quarter financial results next week on August 5 at 5:30 pm Eastern Time.

In a recent interview with CarBuzz, Lucid‘s CEO revealed he already tested Rivian’s SUV and said he’s “not worried”.

Later on, Rawlinson reiterated the company’s ambition to become a volume manufacturer and reach one million units sold per year. In the second quarter of the year, the company delivered 2,394 vehicles while producing 2,110 units.
