Lucid Motors said it still plans to launch the base trim of its second model, the Gravity SUV, in the U.S. later this year, even as production bottlenecks weigh on some configurations of the vehicle.
When it revealed prices and opened reservations in the US last November, Lucid said production of the entry-level Gravity Touring trim would begin in “late 2025” at its Casa Grande (Arizona) plant.
The company now says the timeline remains unchanged, telling Automotive News in an email: “It is still planned for launch later this year.”
The Touring variant starts at $81,550 including shipping, making it the cheapest version of the three-row SUV, which Lucid is positioning as a higher-volume model than its debut Air sedan launched in 2021.
Interim CEO Marc Winterhoff told Gravity reservation holders in mid-August that while “most configurations are now in production,” others remain delayed by component shortages.
In an email to customers obtained by EV, Winterhoff said the ramp-up of the seven-seat SUV had “faced a few challenges, including supplier constraints,” but added that “deliveries are accelerating” and “momentum is expected to build through the summer.”
“Most configurations are now in production, and we’re working diligently to resolve the few that remain affected by component shortages,” he wrote.
Winterhoff said the company expects “nearly all build combinations” to be available by the end of summer, though some buyers may still face longer waits than initially anticipated.
The remarks follow Winterhoff’s acknowledgement in late June that Gravity’s production ramp had “gone more slowly than desired.”
Nick Twork, Lucid’s global head of communications, said recently that output is now picking up, with “more Gravity vehicles produced in recent weeks than in the January–June period.”
He added: “Supply chain constraints were behind the initial issues we experienced in scaling up, but we have since addressed many of those constraints and improved manufacturing efficiency during the year.”
The update comes as Lucid opened European orders for the Gravity top trim on Monday at the IAA Munich Auto Show.
Sales are starting with the top-trim Grand Touring edition, priced from €116,900 ($136,980), with a fully loaded version reaching €151,550 ($177,720).
Prices for the Touring start at €99,900 ($117,060) in Europe.
