Lucid Sells Only One Car in the Netherlands in April

After setting a new sales record in the Netherlands in March, premium EV maker Lucid Motors sold just one unit of its Air sedan in the country in April.

The California-based company, which plans to add the Gravity SUV to the European lineup next year, had sold two vehicles in January, one in February, and 12 in March.

Between January 1 and April 30, Lucid sold 16 EVs in the Dutch market, where its European headquarters are located.

Lucid expanded to the Netherlands in late 2022 and has been selling its debut model there via flagship showrooms, as done in its other European markets.

However, and as first reported by EV last December, new markets are planned for the future with the brand working with local partners and distributors, allowing a much lower investment in infrastructure and staff.

In 2024, sales in the Dutch market stood at 48 units. The entry-level variant of the Air sedan — a rear wheel drive Air Pure — starts at €88,000 ($100,100) while the top-tier Sapphire version is available for pre-order at €255,000 ($290,000).

Competitors

BYD sold 268 hybrid and fully electric vehicles in the Dutch market last month while the Geely-backed Polestar registered 170 units, up 12% year over year.

Premium brand Zeekr recorded 80 units in the Dutch market last month, one unit down from March but a 29% increase year over year, while its main competitor Nio‘s sales fell to 2 vehicles in April.

The Shanghai-based EV maker’s sales plunged 91% from a year earlier, marking its lowest figures since expanding to the Netherlands in late 2022.

In Europe, Lucid is currently selling its vehicles in Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Switzerland. Additional European markets are expected to follow later this year.

New Strategy in Europe

Speaking during the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, the recently appointed interim CEO Marc Winterhoff said Lucid is “accelerating the growth of our retail footprint and market coverage in Europe.”

The German executive confirmed EV‘s report when saying Lucid is introducing “additional distribution channels like importers and agency models for select countries in addition to our existing direct-to-consumer model.”

New Models

The company plans to roll out the Sapphire variant of the Air in Europe later this quarter. Its Gravity SUV is expected to debut in early 2026, with orders opening mid-2025. A more affordable midsize model, priced below $50,000, is scheduled to enter production in late 2026 and arrive in Europe the following year.

Cláudio Afonso founded CARBA in early 2021 and launched the news blog EV later that year. Following a 1.5-year hiatus, he relaunched EV in April 2024. In late 2024, he also started AV, a blog dedicated to the autonomous vehicle industry.
